  • Patent number: 8723286
Abstract: Coil units are disclosed for use in electrical circuits. An exemplary coil unit comprises a rigid substrate having an electrically non-conductive three-dimensional (3-D) surface. At least one 3-D coil (shaped, for example, as a helical coil) of semiconductor material is formed on the substrate surface. Disposed on the at least one coil of semiconductor material is a 3-D coil of a conductive metal. The coil of conductive metal is situated sufficiently closely to the at least one coil of semiconductor material for the coil of conductive metal to produce Coulombic drag in the at least one coil of semiconductor material when the coils are conductive of low-mass electrons. The semiconductor material can be a photoconductor or other material that has conductive low-mass electrons.

  • Patent number: 8722338
Abstract: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) was recently used to identify SNPs in a genomic region on chromosome 4 that associate with serum urate levels and gout. The present disclosure shows that human ATP-binding cassette, subfamily G, 2 (ABCG2), encoded by the ABCG2 gene contained in this region, is a hitherto unknown urate efflux transporter. The present disclosure further shows that native ABCG2 is located in the brush border membrane of kidney proximal tubule cells, where it mediates renal urate secretion. Introduction of the mutation Q141K encoded by the common SNP rs2231142 by site-directed mutagenesis resulted in reduced urate transport rates compared to wild-type ABCG2. Data from a population-based study of 14,783 individuals support rs2231142 as the causal variant in the region and show highly significant associations with urate levels and gout.

  • Patent number: 8726299
Abstract: A system and method for managing data storage. A computer system comprises a data storage application and an API. The API presents a logical storage model to the data storage application for storing data on one or more storage appliances and accepts first and second plugins coupling first and second storage appliances, respectively, to the API. The first and second storage appliances store data according to different physical storage models. The API receives an access request from the data storage application targeting a portion of the logical storage model. In response to the access request, the API identifies a plugin and a corresponding storage appliance associated with the portion of the logical storage model and utilizes the identified plugin to map the portion of the logical storage model to a corresponding portion of the selected storage appliance's physical storage model.

  • Patent number: 8721889
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for treating wastewater in which the majority of solids and biological oxygen demand compounds are separated from the wastewater feed using a primary separation process, to produce a solids phase and a water phase. The solids phase is irradiated to reduce the level of pathogens such that it is safe to use as a soil substitute and/or additive so that the solids can thus be disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner. In additional embodiments, the solids that have been disinfected by radiation are mixed with a suitable inert filler material to produce a soil substitute, fertilizer, compost, or other soil additive. The liquid phase is treated in a substantially smaller system than would be required for treating the full-strength wastewater that can include a suspended media biological regeneration reactor system.
