Patent number: 8998025Abstract: Base for a container, the base being made of polymeric material, including a support surface having an outer perimeter defining a first dimension along a major axis and a second dimension along a minor axis disposed at an angle to the major axis. An inner wall is coupled to the support surface opposite the outer perimeter. A dome projects upwardly from the inner wall and has an initial depth with respect to the support surface, the initial depth of the dome is between approximately 8 percent to approximately 15 percent of the first dimension. The dome includes a major radius of curvature along the major axis and a minor radius of curvature along the minor axis. The dome is deflectable in response to a differential pressure across the base without permanent deformation of the base.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2014Date of Patent: April 7, 2015Assignee: Graham Packaging Company, L.P.Inventors: Raymond A. Pritchett, Jr., William W. Brecheisen, Mark P. Sprenkle, John P. Dinkel, Matthew T. Gill

Patent number: 7390453Abstract: A container and closure package in that includes a container having a body, a finish wall extending from the body with at least one external thread, a circular throat at an axial edge of the finish wall remote from the body and having a lesser inner diameter than the finish wall, and a pour spout extending axially from the throat at greater inner diameter than the throat. The container body, finish wall, throat and pour spout are of integrally blow molded construction as formed, with the inside diameter of the throat being optionally reamed as required for sealing engagement with the closure. The closure has a base wall, a peripheral outer skirt extending from the base wall with an internal thread for receipt over the external thread on the container finish wall, and an internal skirt extending from the base wall and spaced radially inwardly from the outer skirt for sliding plug-sealing receipt within the throat, with the pour spout being disposed between the inner and outer skirts of the closure.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2006Date of Patent: June 24, 2008Assignee: Graham Packaging Company, L.P.Inventors: William W. Patent number: 6315167Abstract: Finish has bayonet provisions, each including axial catch portions, stop, rib and detent ridge downward from the distal end of the catch portion. Finish also has ramp provisions, each including axial stop and sloping wedge portion extending down from top of axial stop and sloping at 40° from an imaginary circumferential line at the base of the wedge portion. The stops, detent ridges and wedges all provide tactile notification to user as to where lugs on a cooperant cap are vis-a-vis catch portion and top of finish.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2000Date of Patent: November 13, 2001Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventors: William W. Brecheisen, Eugene F. Haffner, James E. Hiltner, Wing-Kwong Keung, Anthony J. Scott, George R. Trepina

Patent number: 6155462Abstract: This finish has bayonet provisions, each including circumferential catch portions, a first stop rib and a detent ridge downward from the distal end of the catch portion. This finish also has ramp provisions, each including a second stop rib and a sloping wedge portion extending down from top of the stop rib and having a surface sloping at 40.degree. from an imaginary circumferential line at the wedge portion. The stops, detent ridges and wedge surfaces all provide tactile notification to user as to the location of lugs on a cooperant cap on the finish.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1999Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Owens-Illinois Closure Inc.Inventors: William W. Patent number: 5988460Abstract: A plastic container that includes a hollow container body having a body opening, a cylindrical finish wall portion surrounding the body opening and extending from the body, with external threads for receiving a closure, and a spout secured to and projecting axially from the externally threaded wall portion. The body, wall portion and spout are of as-molded one-piece or monolithic integral plastic construction. The axial dimension of the spout preferably is greater than that of the externally threaded wall portion of the container finish. The threaded wall portion or the spout has an axially oriented surface that lies in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the container finish for sealing engagement with a closure or cap that is threaded onto the container finish.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1998Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastic Products Inc.Inventors: William W. Brecheisen, James L. Gregory, Igor F. Beaufils

Patent number: 5928581Abstract: In a blow-molding system in which a parison programmer is coupled to orifice tooling in an extrusion die head for controlling wall thickness of an extruded parison fed to a blow-molding apparatus, a method of synchronizing operation of the parison programmer contemplates placement of observable indicia on the parison after the parison exits the die head. This indicia placement preferably is carried out under control of the parison programmer to place the indicia at a predetermined position along the parison profile, such that mis-positioning of the indicia indicates absence of phase synchronization of the parison programmer. The indicia is then observed on a molded article to determine phasing of the parison programmer relative to the molding apparatus, and operation of the parison programmer is adjusted to correct any mis-positioning.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Owens-Brockway Plastics Products Inc.Inventors: John Philip Dinkel, William W.
