Patent number: 4583488Abstract: Apparatus in a vacuum deposition system positions a workpiece holder in substantial alignment with a source of material to be deposited onto a work piece affixed to the workpiece holder. The apparatus also rotates the workpiece holder about the deposition source and linearly drives the workpiece holder to varying distances from the deposition source. The apparatus used to drive the workpiece holder is sealably mounted atop an opening in the vacuum chamber. The apparatus enables multiple source depositions to be carried out consecutively without accessing the vacuum chamber. By aligning the workpiece holder over the deposition source, nonuniform deposition onto the workpiece is substantially eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1984Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: William W. Patent number: 4042455Abstract: A process for dissolving radioactive corrosion products from the internal surfaces of a nuclear reactor. In preparation for reactor refueling, the reactor coolant is depressurized and the temperature reduced to .about.140.degree. F. Hydrogen is purged from the system and the coolant repressurized to about 400 psi to permit operation of a reactor coolant circulating pump. A solution containing oxygen, preferably hydrogen peroxide, is injected into the reactor coolant which is then circulated through the reactor. The thus oxygenated coolant effects prompt and nearly complete release, at least 95% complete, of radioactive corrosion products, especially cobalt 58, from the reactor internal surfaces. The coolant is then circulated through a demineralizer which removes such products by ion exchange processes, at the completion of which, the reactor is opened to commence replacing fuel assemblies in the reactor.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1975Date of Patent: August 16, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventor: William W. Patent number: 4027152Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for transmitting binary-coded information over a fiber-optic link which provides a link monitor to indicate whether the fiber-optic link is intact and operating. The binary-coded information is translated into a pulse-coded signal which provides a positive pulse for a positive-going transition in the binary signal and a negative pulse for a negative-going transition in the binary signal. In addition, a refresh pulse of the same polarity as the preceding pulse is provided whenever there has been no pulse for a predetermined amount of time.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1975Date of Patent: May 31, 1977Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: William W.
