The method includes assigning a transmission mode to a physical channel, where the physical channel supports multiple timeslot durations and the transmission mode is selected from a single user (SU) or a multi-user (MU); selecting a timeslot duration from the multiple durations for a payload; obtaining, when the transmission mode is SU, a timeslot grant for use of the physical channel for the timeslot duration; and transmitting a burst including the payload, where the burst is transmitted synchronized with the timeslot grant when the transmission mode is SU and the burst is transmitted without synchronization when the transmission mode is MU.

The method includes receiving a burst encoded with a robust modulation coding scheme (MCS) as RX signals; generating, for each of the RX signals, a burst SNR, soft decision symbols and a packet; weighing, each of soft decision symbols with a respective burst SNR, to calculate soft combined symbols that are used to generate a Maximal-Ratio Combining (MRC) packet; and selecting, from the packets and the MRC packet, a CRC passed packet as an output. An adaptive dual burst transmitter is disclosed.

    Abstract: The present teachings disclose implementations of a UE and a method for providing a Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, the method including: receiving an NB-IoT downlink over a forward link; obtaining MAC configuration parameters, a transmit-timing offset and a transmit-frequency offset; pre-adjusting, to align with a return link timing and a return link frequency, a transmit-timing with the transmit-timing offset and a transmit-frequency with the transmit-frequency offset; requesting, based on the MAC configuration parameters and after the pre-adjusting, a connection with a Random-Access Preamble (RAR) over an NB-IoT uplink via the return link; and establishing the connection upon receiving a Random-Access Response (RAR), where a Round Trip-Time (RTT) from a transmitting antenna to a receiving antenna is greater than 67 microseconds (us), and both the NB-IoT downlink and the NB-IoT uplink use a mostly unchanged NB-IoT standard waveform.
