  • Patent number: 4351107
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a method and apparatus for compressing winding elements in the slot of an electric machine with a pneumatic compressing element, which, in a preferred embodiment, consists of a rubber bellows, configured for insertion in the slot, with a rigid conduit disposed inside the bellows for delivering pressurized fluid to the bellows.

  • Patent number: 4333223
Abstract: A shielding cylinder includes an inner cylinder and an outer cylinder of sheet metal. Axial ducts and annular ducts are arranged between the two cylinders to provide flow paths for a cooling fluid. The outer cylinder can be reinforced by one or more peripheral bulges with the bulges forming additional ducts. The shielding cylinder is manufactured by placing a heated inner cylinder onto a mandrel. The inner cylinder is then machined after cooling operation. A heated outer cylinder is then pushed onto the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder is then cooled and machined. A two piece mandrel facilitates the manufacture of long shielding cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4292828
Abstract: A method and apparatus for expanding cylinders for work hardening, especially for large diameter cylinders and cylinders of great length, are disclosed. The cylinder is clamped between two flanges and a shaft is inserted coaxially through the cylinders and through the flanges to reduce the force applied axially to the flanges while pressure is applied to the interior of the cylinder. Various arrangements for adjusting the position of the flanges to accommodate for expansion of the cylinder are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4266603
Abstract: A heat exchanger preferably having spirally shaped cooling passages is described. The heat exchanger has the walls of the cooling passages formed first by two jaws spaced apart. The ends of the jaws are then joined together to form the fluid passage. The cooling passage is therefore integral with the base body.

  • Patent number: 4251745
Abstract: A cooling arrangement for superconductive windings of electric machines is disclosed where the winding is held in a slot by means of a key. A distribution manifold is provided having distribution ducts adjacent to the key. The axially extending rotor slot is provided with upper and lower collecting ducts in its upper and lower portions respectively which are interconnected with a plurality of generally radially extending cooling ducts. The arrangement insures an efficient cooling with a comparatively simple design.

  • Patent number: 4251680
Abstract: An arrangement for mounting lead-through conductors is disclosed. A ceramic plate is sealed between two steel flanges. The conductors pass through the ceramic plate and are sealed on both sides. When one side of the plate is exposed to high pressure, low temperature gas, and the other side of the plate is exposed to high vacuum at a higher temperature, the plate is protected from excessive stresses by providing gaskets on one side of the ceramic plate having a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the gaskets on the other side of the ceramic plate.

  • Patent number: 4250713
Abstract: An apparatus for providing selective fluid communication between a helium transporter and an electric machine with superconductive exciter windings includes a coupling of the transporter which is mated to an undriven end of the shaft of the electric machine. Passages in the coupling and shaft supply liquid helium to the winding and return warmed liquid helium to the transporter. Quick interchangeability of the transporter is facilitated by a bayonet fitting and a spring biased sealing arrangement between corresponding passages in the coupling and shaft. A pressure actuated valve in the passages is provided to interrupt fluid communication when the pressure of the liquid helium falls below a predetermined value. A centrifugal force actuated valve in the passages is provided to interrupt fluid communication when the shaft speed falls below a predetermined value.
