Abstract: A component-based adaptation system is provided in which the operation of an application or the data being used by the application is adapted according to an application-specific or a user-specific policy. Following a request for a document by an application, the requested document is retrieved and converted into an application-independent format. The data of the document is then supplied to the application according to a user-specific or application-specific policy. The application of the policy may result in a lower fidelity version or a subset of the data of the requested document being supplied to the application. The policy may also govern the updating of the data supplied to the application. The data supplied to the application may be updated following the occurrence of a tracked event in the application or according to a background policy governing the supply of updated data without reference to the user's operation of the application.

Abstract: The invention provides a storage and retrieval routine for Web objects. A Web page typically includes several objects such as text, images and hyper-links to other Web pages. Each Web page and its objects are usually stored in separate files. A storage and retrieval routine stores objects that correspond to the same Web page in co-located positions on a disk. Therefore, when the Web page and its embedded and hyper-linked Web objects are retrieved, the seek time is reduced, thereby reducing the object retrieval time as perceived by a computer user and increasing the number of requests per second that a Web content server can deliver.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to the field of computing in resource-poor environments, such as mobile and/or wireless computing systems, and, more particularly, to a system and a method for adaptation-aware editing and/or progressive update propagation that enable authoring multimedia content and/or collaborative work on mobile and/or wireless computing systems and devices. A method for the exchange of a data document between a central data store and a client, the data document including one or more data elements, may be provided. The method may comprise transmitting the data document from the central data store to the client, wherein the transmitted data document received at the client includes data elements having a lower fidelity level as compared with the fidelity level of the data elements stored in the version of the data document at the data store, and modifying one or more data elements of the data document at the client.
