  • Publication number: 20050024307
Abstract: This invention provides a method and apparatus for driving bistable cholesteric liquid crystal displays. The method and apparatus provided a display in which all the pixels are initially driven to the P state. Selected pixels for the display are then driven to the FC state to provide the desired message. The state of the pixels is then maintained for a viewing period prior to any resetting of the display to the P state. The switching from the P state to the FC state allows faster addressing times and lower voltages to be used in driving the display.

  • Publication number: 20040008298
Abstract: This invention relates to methods for preparing photo-patterned mono- or polychromatic, polarizing films. The polarizer can be pixelated into a number of small regions wherein some of the regions have one orientation of the principal neutral or color absorbing axis; and some other of the said regions have another orientation of the principal neutral or color absorbing axis. The axis orientation is determined by the polarization vector of actinic radiation and the multi-axes orientation is possible by a separated masked exposure. This polarizer can be placed on the interior substrate surface of the LCD cell.

  • Publication number: 20030072896
Abstract: The present invention relates to chemical compositions of synthetic dyes and a fabrication process for the photo-induced alignment of liquid crystals. The compositions and methods of the invention are applicable to lateral field driven LCDs such as the In-plane Switching mode. A method of alignment using a multiple wavelengths light source is disclosed. This is a non-contact technique to align liquid crystals so that the particulates and static charges generated by the rubbing process can be eliminated. A synthetic dye film is exposed to a linearly polarized or non-polarized light. Due to photoisomerization, conformational molecular change occurs, and the isomer orientation is no longer random but becomes anisotropic. This in turn gives rise to a homogeneous anisotropic orientation of the liquid crystal molecules.

  • Publication number: 20020172893
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of forming a polarizing material comprising exposing a layer of dichroic material to activating light illumination to provide an ordered structure with a distinguished absorption axis and thus photo-induce polarization, and fixing the induced polarization by polymerisation of the dichroic layer. The present invention also provides novel polarizing materials formed thereby. By selectively exposing regions of the dichroic material to differing activating radiation, different regions with different polarization axes can be created. The polarizing material can also be provided with a coating or coatings to alter the spectral response, and a stack formed of a plurality if dichroic layers may be provided.

  • Patent number: 6448441
Abstract: The present invention involves a process for the co-production of ammonia and urea in which two parallel gasifiers are utilized so as to optimize the H2/CO2 ratio in the combined syngas product, thereby maximizing the ammonia and urea production. In a first gasifier, solid and/or liquid hydrocarbon materials are partially oxidized in the presence of an oxygen-rich gas in the presence of a temperature moderator, thereby generating a first synthesis gas mixture comprising carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In a second gasifier, natural gas is partially oxidized in the presence of an oxygen-rich gas, thereby generating a first synthesis gas mixture comprising carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Because natural gas has a lower C/H ratio than the solid and/or liquid hydrocarbon materials, insufficient CO2 is produced in the natural gas gasifier for urea production when only natural gas is used to produce syngas.

  • Patent number: 5496859
Abstract: An improved method for the production of stoichiometric ratioed syngas comprises partially oxidizing a gaseous feedstock containing substantial amounts of methane in a gasifier to produce a hot synthesis gas stream that is passed in indirect heat exchange through a steam reforming catalytic reactor. A portion of the steam reforming reaction products are mixed with the cooled gasifier synthesis gas stream exiting the steam reforming catalytic reactor to form a combined synthesis gas stream, called a "stoichiometric ratioed synthesis gas." The stoichiometric ratioed synthesis gas stream can then be passed into a methanol synthesis unit at substantially the specifications for optimal methanol production with little or no external compression. In a second embodiment the gasifier unit is arranged and operated in parallel with a primary steam reformer unit.

  • Patent number: 5458808
Abstract: A process is provided for continuously controlling the hydrocarbon heat content and flow rate of a partial oxidation unit feed-gas stream under conditions where the composition and hence the hydrocarbon heat content of the feed-gas stream is subject to variation. The hydrocarbon heat content of the incoming gases is continuously measured and compared against a design hydrocarbon heat content. An evaluating means calculates whether a moderator is required to decrease the hydrocarbon heat content to the design hydrocarbon heat content or a supplemental high hydrocarbon heat content gas is required to increase the hydrocarbon heat content to the design hydrocarbon heat content. The process utilizes recycle synthesis gas as a moderator.

  • Patent number: 5152976
Abstract: A process for producing high purity hydrogen is disclosed. Specifically, the process includes (1) partially oxidizing a refinery offgas feedstock to produce a synthesis gas mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, (2) reacting the synthesis gas mixture with steam to convert the carbon monoxide into a raw gas mixture which primarily includes carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and (3) purifying the raw gas mixture to produce high purity hydrogen and a reject gas mixture of impurities. In a preferred embodiment, the purification step occurs in a pressure swing adsorption unit.Alternative embodiments are also described, each of which essentially involve the optional treatment and/or use of the reject gas mixture of impurities.

  • Patent number: 5152975
Abstract: A process for producing high purity hyrogen is disclosed. Specifically, the process includes (1) partially oxidizing a gaseous hydrocarbonaceous feedstock to produce a synthesis gas mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, (2) reacting the synthesis gas mixture with steam to convert the carbon monoxide into a raw gas mixture which primarily includes carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and (3) subjecting the raw gas mixture to pressure swing adsorption to purify the raw gas mixture, thereby producing high purity hydrogen and a reject gas mixture of impurities. The gaseous hydrocarbonaceous feed is specific, inasmuch as it is characterized by containing a major component which includes at least one C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 hydrocarbon and which has an average molecular weight of up to about 30.
