  • Patent number: 6686703
Abstract: An improved high frequency ballast is disclosed. The high frequency ballast establishes a lamp current for a gas discharge lamp during a starting operation of the gas discharge lamp wherein an operating ampere level of the lamp current facilitates a substantial achievement by the gas discharge lamp of a color specification associated with the gas discharge lamp. Thereafter, during a stable operation of the gas discharge lamp, the high frequency ballast applies a frequency modulation to an operating frequency of the lamp current and/or an amplitude modulation of the lamp current.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 10, 2002
Date of Patent: February 3, 2004
    Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.
Inventors: Robert A. Erhardt, Oscar J. Deurloo, Jerzy Janczak, Hendrik A. Van Esveld, Winston D. Couwenberg, Ronald H. Van Der Voort

  • Patent number: 4546285
Abstract: Low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp having a curved discharge vessel in which a mercury discharge is maintained between the electrodes and in which furthermore an amlagam is provided to control the mercury vapor pressure, the discharge vessel containing a rare gas mixture which contains at least 50 at.% krypton at a pressure of 130 to 520 Pa.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 8, 1985
Date of Patent: October 8, 1985
    Assignee: U.S. Philips Corporation
Inventors: Jean J. Heuvelmans, Winston D. Couwenberg, Franciscus A. S. Ligthart
  • Patent number: 4277720
Abstract: Low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp having a relatively small discharge vessel containing as the buffer gas a rare gas mixture which is rich in helium, but which also comprises a quantity of one or more heavier rare gases, preferably crypton. The heavier rare gases increase the arc voltage.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 15, 1979
Date of Patent: July 7, 1981
    Assignee: U.S. Philips Corporation
Inventors: Winston D. Couwenberg, Albert Bouwknegt, Franciscus A. S. Ligthart, Jean J. Heuvelmans
  • Patent number: 4237401
Abstract: Low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp having a discharge vessel comprising at least two thermally emitting electrodes as well as mercury and a rare gas or a combination of rare gases, the discharge vessel being provided with a glass wall permeable to the ultra-violet radiation generated in the mercury discharge, at least a halide of mercury being present in the discharge vessel.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 18, 1978
Date of Patent: December 2, 1980
    Assignee: U.S. Philips Corporation
    Inventor: Winston D. Couwenberg
  • Patent number: 4208604
Abstract: Low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp comprising an U-shaped discharge tube of which at least the legs are accommodated in recesses of a cylindrical body.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 18, 1978
Date of Patent: June 17, 1980
    Assignee: U.S. Philips Corporation
