Patent number: 6823602Abstract: A continuous measurement-while-drilling surveying apparatus includes a fiber optic gyroscope sensitive to rotation about the tool spin axis of the bottom hole assembly and a second fiber optic gyroscope sensitive to rotation of the bottom hole assembly about an axis normal to the tool spin axis. The first gyroscope may be shaped as a torus to accommodate flow of drilling mud through the bottom hole assembly. The outputs of the first and second gyroscopes are processed together with acceleration signals from three accelerometers in a microprocessor which determines the orientation, velocity and position of the bottom hole assembly on a continuous basis.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2003Date of Patent: November 30, 2004Assignee: University Technologies International Inc.Inventors: Aboelmagd Noureldin, Herb Tabler, Winston Smith, Dave Irvine-Halliday, Martin P. Patent number: 6543554Abstract: There is provided an adjustable housing for use with a drill string for controlled directional drilling of a well hole. The housing includes an upper sub and a lower sub each having a first portion extending along a primary axis and a second portion extending along a secondary axis offset from the primary axis by a predetermined angle. The second portions are rotatably mounted together such that the secondary axes of the respective upper and lower subs are coincident. The upper sub is thus rotatable in relation to the lower sub between a bent position wherein the primary axes of the upper and lower subs are misaligned and a parallel position wherein the primary axes of the upper and lower subs are parallel to each other. A locking member is slidably mounted on splines extending radially from the second portion of the upper sub such that the locking member is slidable between an engaged position and disengaged position.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2001Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: Continental Directional Corp.Inventor: Winston Smith

Patent number: 6533071Abstract: A ladder with an incorporated pair of stabilizers. Each stabilizer comprises a base leg and an adjustable leg. Each adjustable leg is pivotally mounted on a side of the ladder, with the adjustable leg having a plurality of holes over its length. The base leg slides on a track within the adjustable leg and can be set to a specific length. An additional locking means is provided to temporarily lock the adjustable leg to the side of the ladder while in use.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2001Date of Patent: March 18, 2003Inventor: Winston Smith

Patent number: 5495901Abstract: An adjustable bent housing for use in downhole drilling which includes a housing, mandrel, ring and locking mechanism. The housing has a housing central axis, a downward facing end face defining a plane whose normal is offset from the housing central axis, and an inner shoulder parallel to the downward facing end face. The mandrel has a mandrel central axis, a first end dimensioned to fit inside the housing and having a downward facing outer shoulder defining a plane whose normal is offset from the mandrel central axis. The ring is axially slidable on the mandrel, with a ring central axis and an upward facing end face defining a plane whose normal is offset from the ring central axis. A locking mechanism, a mandrel head threaded onto the mandrel, engages and disengages the upward facing end face of the ring with the downward facing end face of the housing and simultaneously engages and disengages the inner shoulder of the housing with the outer shoulder of the mandrel.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1995Date of Patent: March 5, 1996Assignee: Canadian Downhole Drill Systems Inc.Inventors: Raymond D. Livingstone, David Kutinsky, Murray Wilson, Winston Smith
