  • Patent number: 4155489
Abstract: A leakproof pump construction for hand-held dispensers, comprising a pump cylinder, an annular piston having a hollow bore which is slightly conical, said piston being reciprocatible in the cylinder between high and low positions therein, and a hollow ducted plunger carrying the piston and extending through the bore thereof. The plunger has a side orifice and discharge passage or duct through which liquid product can flow to be dispensed from a spray head. The piston is movable between high and low positions on the plunger to control the discharge through the latter. For the non-dispensing condition, the piston seals against an internal shoulder in the cylinder while a valve head at the lower portion of the plunger seals against and effects a slight deformation of a cooperable valve seat on the lower body portion of the piston, so as to provide an improved seal between the latter two parts.

The sealing surface of the valve head and the valve seat are both of conical configuration such that the valve head normally applies radially inward pressure on the walls of the piston.

  • Patent number: 4018237
Abstract: A cosmetic compact in the form of a small booklet of flexible sheet material comprising a one-piece base and cover, the latter being hingedly connected to the base and adapted to overlie the same. Heat-sealed to the members are substantially flat retainer sheets, both of which are provided with upstanding bead formations extending at least partially around peripheral edge portions thereof. The bead formations of each sheet are so arranged as to be capable of interfitting with one another and being frictionally nested, thereby to maintain the members in closed position when compact is not in use. Optionally, one or both of the bead formations can be provided with undercut surfaces to thereby improve the frictional retention between the two members. The flat space outlined by the bead formation of the base member is adapted to receive a tray of cosmetic material, and the space outlined by the bead formation of the cover member is available for securing a mirror thereto.

  • Patent number: 4010874
Abstract: A pump construction for hand-held dispensers and the like, wherein a hollow plunger that is reciprocatively mounted at the top of a cylinder, slidably carries a hollow piston which is movable on the plunger between high and low positions thereon. The plunger has at its lower end a valve head which is engageable with an annular bearing seat at the lower end of the piston to seal off the passage through the piston when the latter is in its lower position on the plunger. When the piston is in its high position on the plunger, the valve head no longer seals the piston and the liquid product can flow past the valve head and through the piston and plunger, to be discharged from a spray head or orifice member at the top end of the plunger. For the high position of the piston on the plunger, cooperable valve portions of these parts become engaged to seal off the upper end of the piston so as to prevent leakage of liquid past the same.

  • Patent number: 3963150
Abstract: A squeeze bottle dispenser having a puff-type spray discharge characteristic. The bottle comprises a container having a flexible wall portion adapted to be squeezed in the hand of the user, a discharge nozzle, and a spring-urged check valve controlling flow to the nozzle. The valve includes a hollow valve housing with an annular valve seat, a ball-check engageable with the seat so as to seal the same, and a spring which normally biases the ball against the seat to seal the container and prevent leakage of its contents. The arrangement is such that when the container wall is squeezed, the ball-check initially prevents fluid from entering the valve housing until a predetermined pressure in the container has been attained, after which the spring yields somewhat, resulting in a sudden impulse or puff-type discharge through the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 3958727
Abstract: A dispenser of the hand-held type for discharging fluid under pressure, comprising a container having an open top end, and a valve assemblage which is received in the open end and secured in place by means of a crimped ferrule. The container has a circular rim surrounding the opening, together with an annular external shoulder immediately adjacent the rim. The valve assemblage includes a valve housing defining a valve chamber, a resilient valve seat which constitutes one end of the chamber, and a movable valve stem having a longitudinal opening and transverse side passage adapted to communicate with the chamber when the stem is depressed. The housing further includes an annular mounting flange which engages and rests upon the rim of the container, and a depending skirt which bears against inner wall portions of the container, all to form a leakproof seal therewith. The ferrule extends over the annular mounting flange of the valve housing and is crimped onto the external shoulder of the container.

  • Patent number: 3957178
Abstract: A small hand-held dispenser of the pump variety, comprising a container and a cooperable dispenser pump construction adapted to be carried by the container. The pump per se is secured therein by means of a unique plastic closure which is in the form of an inverted, dish-shaped member. The closure has relatively thin walls enabling it to be readily molded, and has a depending peripheral flange with an internal bead which is forced over an external shoulder on the rim of the container so as to effect a snap fit therewith. In one embodiment, the flange has a depending portion which extends downward a substantial distance beyond the location of the internal bead, so as to minimize the likelihood of the flange being cracked either during or after the forced bypass of the bead and container shoulder. The plastic closure not only securely mounts the pump assemblage, but also effects a leak-proof connection with the container while at the same time simplifying the assembly operations and tooling.

  • Patent number: 3951310
Abstract: An aerosol dispenser of the hand-held type, comprising a can which contains a flexible, collapsible bag having the substance to be discharged. A valve on the can communicates with the bag to effect the discharge. In the can a spring engages a wall portion of the bag, tending to collapse the same, and there are manually operable means including a finger piece for varying the force applied by the spring to the bag as the contents of the latter are gradually depleted whereby the rate of discharge of the spray can be maintained more nearly constant regardless of the quantity of substance occupying the bag at any particular time.

  • Patent number: 3937366
Abstract: A hand-held pump dispenser comprising a container having a neck portion, a pump assemblage including a piston and a tubular stationary cylinder member, the latter being adapted for disposition in the neck portion, and a resilient press-fit adapter carrying the cylinder member of the pump assemblage and arranged for insertion in the neck portion so as to make a tight press fit therewith. Interlocking means are provided on the cylinder member and on the adapter for enabling the latter to be snapped onto the member; additional means on the container neck and the adapter are provided for enabling the two parts, when assembled, to be snapped into the neck portion. The arrangement is such that all parts can be readily molded in simple mold cavities and easily assembled with a minimum of time and effort, and in the absence of special tooling or equipment.
