  • Patent number: 4392469
Abstract: A regulator shaft, rotary centrifugal weights, and a governor member which is slidable on the regulator shaft, are arranged in a pressurized, fuel-filled inner chamber of a fuel injection apparatus. The centrifugal weights engage regulator springs via the governor member and a control sleeve. The governor member is closed adjacent the free end of the regulator shaft except for a throttle opening for communication with the inner chamber. The governor member is provided with a work chamber, one extremity of which is limited by the regulator shaft. A conduit leading to a fuel tank communicates with the work chamber. A magnetic valve connected to an electronic control device for control of the fuel flow is provided in the conduit. Opening the magnetic valve causes a pressure drop in the work chamber which in turn causes the governor member to press against the centrifugal weights, thus enhancing the fuel injection quantity so as to reduce deviations from those desired and pre-set.

  • Patent number: 4392352
Abstract: A method and an apparatus are proposed for regulating and attaining an anti-overload means in turbochargers and in internal combustion engines equipped therewith, serving in cost-favorable embodiment both in Otto (gasoline) engines and in Diesel engines to limit the air throughput of the engine in accordance with the engine speed and to provide that neither the turbocharger, as a result of exceeding its limit rpm, nor the engine can be endangered if the engine exceeds the permissible compression and combustion pressure. In summary, the intent is to attain a favorable adjustment of the exhaust turbocharger over the entire rpm range of the internal combustion engine. To this end, the exhaust gas quantity delivered to the exhaust turbocharger is controlled in accordance with the throughput, that is, in accordance with the air quantity delivered to the engine, with the aid of a bypass line.

  • Patent number: 4380900
Abstract: An apparatus is described for the removal of solid components from the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines, in particular for the removal of soot components from the exhaust gases of self-igniting combustion engines. Under the influence of electrostatic fields, the solid components are diverted and carried to a fresh-air current flowing toward the intake side of the engine. This recirculation of the solid components may be effected either by means of the recirculation of a partial flow of the exhaust gas which has been enriched with solid components, in which case the solid components are deflected into this partial flow in an electrostatic field, or these solid components may be guided into the fresh-air current aspirated by the engine, in this case with the cooperation of a mechanical transport means and electrostatic bonding forces.

  • Patent number: 4365605
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the acceleration behavior of a self-igniting internal combustion engine driven with an exhaust turbocharger by displacing the onset of injection during the acceleration phase toward "early", and a combustion chamber pressure is attained, which at least in part compensates for reduction in engine power caused by sluggishness of the turbocharger and a resultant smaller cylinder charge. Further increase in power is attained by means of an increase in the fuel component made possible by the adjustment of injection onset without exceeding the smoke limit of combustion. Apparatus are furthermore proposed for performing the method according to the invention, in which with the aid of an acceleration signal obtained by hydraulic or electric elements an adjustment toward "early" is effected in a hydraulically functioning injection adjustment device.

  • Patent number: 4359991
Abstract: A fuel control system for an internal combustion engine with correction for optimum values based on a variety of factors. Characteristic engine data is stored in preferably digital memories with capabilities for interpolation. Upon addressing the engine data fields with input signals related to current operational variables, for example the accelerator pedal position, the control system derives therefrom a nominal air flow rate which is used as the reference value in a control loop that sets the amount of recycled exhaust gas and the fresh air flow. As the actual air flow rate approaches the reference value, the fuel flow is adjusted to insure correct mixtures at all times. In another embodiment, the fuel is supplied on demand but cannot exceed a maximum value except under special override conditions. Several other embodiments and variants are presented.

  • Patent number: 4352032
Abstract: The ratio of the inductance of a measuring coil to that of a reference coil is formed by an operational amplifier. Specifically, the measuring coil is connected between the output and the inverting input of the operational amplifier, the reference coil being connected to the inverting input. An AC voltage having substantially symmetrical half waves is applied to the reference coil. The AC voltage is a triangular voltage generated by two additional operational amplifiers. An emitter-follower connected to the output furnishing the triangular voltage decreases the load on the operational amplifiers and therefore allows the connection of a multiplicity of computing stages to the one source of triangular voltage. Additional operational amplifier stages, in conjunction with diodes, constitute a full wave rectifier and filter for the output of the operational amplifier furnishing the ratio signal.

  • Patent number: 4306534
Abstract: An apparatus is proposed which serves to control the ratio of air to fuel quantity of the operational mixture to be introduced into the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine. The actual fuel quantity supplied via an injection apparatus (2) and the actual air quantity supplied via the intake manifold of the engine are measured and processed in a control apparatus (21) into a correction adjusting variable. The apparatus further functions with exhaust recirculation, with the aspirated fresh air quantity being dosed and the remnant filling of the gaseous filling introduced into the combustion chambers of the engine is replaced by recirculated exhaust gas. For the purpose of dosing the fresh air, a symmetrical throttle valve (14) is disposed in the intake manifold, whose position is transferred by means of pneumatic servomotor (23) to a second throttle device (12, 32), by means of which finally the quantity of the recirculated exhaust gas is determined.

  • Patent number: 4300515
Abstract: An apparatus is proposed which serves the purpose of load-dependent actuation of an adjustment device, wherein the cross section and/or the pressure drop of an exhaust recirculation line in an internal combustion engine can be varied in accordance with load. An injection pump of conventional design is associated with the internal combustion engine and further includes a quantity adjustment device, the position of which acts as a control variable for the load. With this control variable, a booster apparatus is controlled via a comparison apparatus; the output variable of the booster apparatus in turn is the control variable for the actuation of an adjustment device which acts on an exhaust recirculation control apparatus. When a threshold value for load is exceeded, the exhaust recirculation is precluded. The control variable is preferably formed as a fuel pressure signal with the fuel withdrawn from the suction chamber of the injection pump.

  • Patent number: 4279146
Abstract: A method for measuring the air quantity supplied to an internal combustion engine by means of a measurement sensor disposed in a bridge circuit having a temperature-dependent resistor (for example, a hot wire or hot film) in the air intake manifold and having a temperature control apparatus, the temperature of the measurement sensor being controlled in an open or closed loop independently of the temperature of the medium to be measured, the properties of the medium to be measured which cause the measurement effect in the hot wire or hot film being dependent on the temperature. With an identical flow quantity but different temperatures in the medium, a correct measurement indication is obtained by making the excess temperature of the hot wire dependent on the temperature of the medium to be measured.

  • Patent number: 4265200
Abstract: There is described a method and apparatus for use in association with the fuel injection pumps of Diesel engines to time the moment of injection. The method and apparatus described relate to a closed-loop control system which engages a final control element in the fuel injection pump that changes the injection timing, i.e. the onset of fuel delivery and, hence, the onset of fuel injection. The controlled variable is the moment of fuel injection, detected by suitable means placed near the injection valves. A set-point value for this instant is derived on the basis of stored data which correlate the correct moment of injection as a function of engine speed with various optimum conditions, for example, low fuel consumption, low smoke generation, low noise, etc. The selection of the proper characteristic curve from the stored data set is made automatically or manually.
