Abstract: An adsorption material for selectively removing Lp(a) lipoprotein, LDL cholesterol and/or vLDL cholesterol from aqueous liquids, in particular from blood, plasma or serum, consisting of porous glass beads as the solid carrier material whose silanol groups present on its surface carry ligands which are covalently bound and have alkyl residues with 4 to 12 atoms containing at least one ether group and a terminal .alpha.,.beta.-diol group containing alkyl residues with 4 to 12 C atoms and wherein the material has no free silanol groups. Also disclosed is a method of using the adsorption material for selective removal or determination of Lp(a) lipoprotein, LDL cholesterol or/and vLDL cholesterol from aqueous liquids, and a device for use in such methods.

Abstract: A process for the specific adsorption of heparin and other heparin-like substances which comprises flowing a buffered solution of whole blood, from which corpuscular blood constituents have been removed, plasma and/or solutions containing whole blood or plasma through an adsorber capsule containing a medium that adsorbs heparin and other heparin-like substances at an acid pH, preferably in the range of 4.0 to 5.5. Preferably, the process is carried out in a closed, extracorporeal circulation and the medium possesses anion exchange resin properties.

Abstract: The invention relates to stroma-free blood substitutes, which are characterized in that fragments, prepared in a per se known manner, of sulfated glycosaminoglycans are covalently linked with hemoglobin to form products the oxygen binding property of which may be adjusted to be within the range of from 2.66 kPa (20 mmHg) to 10.66 kPa (80 mmHg), and preferably to within the range of from 4.79 kPa (36 mmHg) to 9.33 kPa (70 mmHg) by pre-determining the ratio of hemoglobin to glycosaminoglycan fragment, and to a process for preparing blood substitutes.

Abstract: A method of precipitating low-density lipoproteins which comprises administering to a volume of blood, plasma or solutions containing blood or plasma a therapeutically or diagnostically effective amount of a low-density lipoprotein precipitating substance at an acid pH such that an anticoagulent effect associated with heparin is minimized or eliminated. The substances utilized in such a method include hydrolyzed heparin, hydrolyzed heparin acylated at free amine groups, sulfated glycosamino glycan and sulfated polysaccharides.

Abstract: The invention comprises heparin derivative compounds which possess a low density lipoprotein lowering action without a significant anticoagulent effect, and are therefore useful in the treatment of disturbances of fat metabolism, especially hyperlipidemia. The heparin derivatives of the invention are derived from natural heparin, and are prepared by the hydrolysis of heparin and optionally, subsequent acylation at free amine groups of the hydrolyzed heparin.

Abstract: The invention relates to an allosterically active conjugate composition comprising one or more hemoglobin tetramers and one or more adducts of a physiologically safe macromolecular agent covalently linked to one or more ligands, such that the adduct is bound to the allosteric binding site of the hemoglobin in a reversible, non-covalent manner; the invention also relates to methods for producing such conjugate compositions; and to blood substitutes or plasma extenders containing such conjugates.
