Abstract: A process for producing coating compositions involving: (a) providing a reactive diluent, (b) providing an inert solvent, (c) providing a polymeric polyol, (d) providing an isocyanate, (e) reacting (a)-(d) in a reactive diluent comprising a ring opening product of a carboxylic acid ester epoxide with a dihycric or higher alcohol.

Abstract: A new group of polymer flow controllers for powder resin lacquer is provided. The polymer flow controllers contain groups ##STR1## wherein n and m are numbers from 0 to 1000 with the sum of n+m=2-1000 and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently hydrogen, an optionally hydroxy substituted hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 36 carbon atoms aryl and aralkyl optionally substituted in the aromatic nucleus, or R.sub.3 --(--O--C.sub.2 H.sub.4 --)--.sub.p O--CH.sub.2 -- wherein R.sub.3 is an alkyl or alkenyl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms and p is a number of 1 to 10.

Abstract: The process of controlling foam in a foam-generating system by adding to the system a foam-inhibiting effective amount of a block copolymer containing alkylene oxide units obtained by reacting a homopolymer or copolymer of alkylene oxides with a diisocyanate or a dicarboxylic acid derivative containing 2 to 44 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A method of using compositions as foam regulators for water-based systems with a tendency to foam is provided. The method employs a block copolymer containing ester groups corresponding to general formula (I):A--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n --B (I)in which n is an integer of 4 to 300, A is an optionally polymeric hydroxycarboxylic acid function and B is hydrogen, an alkyl or alkenyl radical containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms, a phenyl or benzyl radical or has the same meaning as A. Also provided is a granular free-flowing foam regulating formulation which contains 0.5% by weight to 30% by weight of the block copolymer containing ester groups adsorbed onto from 70% by weight to 99.5% by weight of a granular, substantially inorganic phosphate-free support material.

Abstract: Provided are thickeners based on an aqueous preparation of nonionic, water-dispersible or water-soluble polyurethanes, to their production and to their use. The nonionic, water-dispersible or water-soluble polyurethanes are obtainable by reaction of polyfunctional isocyanates with polyether polyols, monohydric alcohols and, if desired, polyhydric alcohols, wherein the monohydric alcohols contain at least one other polar group. Also provided is a process for the production of such thickeners. The thickeners are particularly suitable for thickening emulsion paints.

Abstract: Polyacrylates and their use for powder coatings are disclosed. In order to prepare the polyacrylates, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, their esters with C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alcohols, and/or fumaric acid, maleic acid, and their anhydrides are first polymerized. The polymers are then reacted with long chain alcohols, one alcohol having an aliphatic chain with 6 to 36 carbon atoms and a second alcohol having a cyclic amide structure. This polyacrylate is suitable as a levelling agent for powder coatings, in particular for powder lacquers. It improves the flowing behavior by reducing the orange peel effect and improves flowability.

Abstract: Poly-N-acylalkyleneimines corresponding to the following formula ##STR1## are used as an oxidatively crosslinking constituent in paints. In formula (I), R--CO represents the acyl radical of a mono- or polyunsaturated, aliphatic C.sub.16-22 carboxylic acid or a mixture of such radicals, R'--CO represents the acyl radical of a C.sub.1-22 carboxylic acid or a mixture of such radicals and x and y represent the percentages by weight of the particular polymer units, x assuming values of 20 to 100% and preferably 20 to 95% and y assuming values of 80 to 0% and preferably 80 to 5%. The indices m and n independently of one another may assume the value 2 or 3.

Abstract: This invention includes new water-dilutable binder mixtures based on alkyd resins modified by poly{ethylene glycol} and poly{N-acyl alkylene imines}, a process for preparing such binder mixtures, and the use of such binders in oxidatively drying paints and varnishes.

Abstract: The physical and chemical properties of a pigment-containing, water-based lacquer dispersion are improved by adding thereto a partial ester of an oligoglycerol obtained by condensation of 2 to 20 moles of glycerol with a C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 fatty acid. The partial ester may be ethoxylated and/or propoxylated, and the fatty acid may be hydroxy substituted.

Abstract: Fungicidal solutions containing 2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalodinitrile are provided. The solutions are prepared by dissolving from 5% to 12% by weight of 2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalodinitrile in 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone. The solutions are clear and can be stirred without streaking or sedimentation into water-based paints or lacquers or solvent-containing paints or lacquers.

Abstract: In the process described, cyclic polyimino ethers with .DELTA..sup.2 -oxazoline or .DELTA..sup.2 -5,6-dihydro-4H-1,3-oxazine structure are applied, alone or together with cyclic monoimino ethers of the same type, or with lactones, plus cationic polymerization catalysts, to solid surfaces and polymerized by heating. The process gives smooth, glossy coatings with high adhesive strength, hardness, and elasticity.

Abstract: Air-drying lacquer binder of a ring-opening product of (I) an epoxidized polyoctenylene or cylco-octene-cycloene copolymer having an average molecular weight of from 600 to 3000 and (II) one or more of (a) an unsaturated carboxylic acid containing from 6 to 22 carbon atoms, (b) an alcohol containing from 2 to 6 hydroxy groups (c) a hydroxyalkylamine containing at least one hydroxyalkyl group, the hydroxy groups of the alcohols (b) and the hydroxyalkylamines (c) being esterified with an unsaturated carboxylic acid containing from 6 to 22 carbon atoms to an OH number of less than 25, and wherein the ring opening product has an average molecular weight of from 1500 to 10,000 and an acid number of from 0.1 to 20. The invention also relates to a process for producing this lacquer binder and to its use in high-solids lacquer systems.
