Patent number: 9785791Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and computer program product for a local authorization extension to provide access authorization for a module to access a computing system. A memory stores information on a first validity range comprising position coordinates for a module seeking to access the computing system and a second validity range comprising position coordinates for a location authorization extension for a computing system. A determination is made of a first position signal from a first receiver of the module and of a second position signal from a second receiver of the location authorization module. Determinations are made as to whether the first position signal is within the first validity range and whether the second position signal is within the second validity range. The module is granted access to the computing system in response to determining that the first position signal is within the first validity range and the second position signal is within the second validity range.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2016Date of Patent: October 10, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Jens-Peter Akelbein, Wolfgang Mueller-Friedt

Patent number: 9590839Abstract: Provided are a system, method, and computer program product for controlling access to a shared storage system in communication with at least one cluster of host nodes. Cluster membership metadata is stored in a storage independent from the shared storage for at least one cluster. The cluster membership metadata is updated in response to an inclusion or exclusion request from a requesting host node comprising one of the host nodes identifying at least one other host node to include or exclude from a cluster. Access to at least one storage volume in the shared storage system is managed in response to the updating of the cluster membership metadata for the inclusion or exclusion request.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2012Date of Patent: March 7, 2017Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert J. Curran, Carlos F. Fuente, Kalyan C. Gunda, Wolfgang Mueller-Friedt

Patent number: 9037790Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving metadata corresponding to data on a removable storage device/medium, storing the metadata to a metadata repository that is not on the removable storage device/medium, associating an identifier with the stored metadata (the identifier corresponding to the removable storage medium/device), and storing the identifier to the metadata repository. According to another embodiment, a computer program product includes a computer readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therewith. The computer readable program code comprises computer readable program code configured to: receive metadata corresponding to data on a removable storage device/medium, store the metadata to a metadata repository, associate an identifier corresponding to the removable storage device/medium with the stored metadata, and store the identifier to the metadata repository. Other methods, systems, and devices are presented as well.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2010Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Glen A. Publication number: 20120271888Abstract: An approach for automatically sharing a tape drive in a heterogeneous computing environment that includes a first computer and second computer is presented. The first computer receives a message that includes a shared tape drive identifier, a source port identifier of the second computer, and a reservation status change for the tape drive. Based on the tape drive identifier, the first computer determines that the tape drive is connected to the first computer. The source port identifier is determined to not identify any host bus adapter installed in the first computer. In response to the first computer determining that the reservation status change indicates a reservation or a release of the tape drive for the second computer, the first computer sets the tape drive offline or online, respectively, in an application executing in the first computer.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2012Publication date: October 25, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Nils Haustein, Leonard George Jesionowski, Wolfgang Mueller-Friedt, Ulf Troppens
