  • Patent number: 4969282
Abstract: An illuminated display or sign includes a hollow glass block defining a closed chamber. One or more block walls are severable for access to the chamber. A neon display or other light source of any configuration is mounted upon the glass block and includes tubular extensions sealed through one wall of the block enclosing electrodes within the chamber. A transformer is enclosed within the chamber with output leads connected to the electrodes. A switch is mounted upon the block and projects into the chamber with a exterior control. Electric leads are connectable to a power source then into the block and are connected to the transformer with a switch interposed in one of the electrical leads within the chamber. As a modification, a display sign is supported within the chamber. As a further modification, two or more glass blocks are arranged in a row or intersecting rows to form a panel, with an independent display in each block or a unit display extending into and enclosed by a plurality of adjacent blocks.

  • Patent number: 4142383
Abstract: A method for the production of decorative objects by providing a viscous liquid and a particulate metal and/or mineral through an opening in a hollow transparent glass envelope and then bonding a cap over the opening with a resin impervious to said liquid is described. The refractive index of the viscous liquid and glass are approximately equal visually. The viscous liquid is preferably glycerine admixed with clear miscible solvents which reduce the viscosity depending upon the metal or mineral used. The liquid is provided through the opening in the hollow glass envelope without wetting the sides of the opening in a manner which leaves a gas (air) pocket inside the envelope adjacent the opening and above the liquid and then a cap is bonded over the opening adjacent the gas pocket. The decorative object is preferably in the form of jewelry, such as earrings or pendants.

  • Patent number: 3951175
Abstract: A method for forming integral internal channels defined by a wall with an annular cross-section inside high softening temperature glass tubing is described. In particular, a reduced pressure is provided inside a rotating tube with heating outside which softens the glass for deformation by the reduced pressure while a smaller tube is maintained in position in contact with the inside walls of the larger tube. The pressure in the smaller tube is usually the same as that in the larger tube and is such that it can collapse at the point of contact to form at least one fusion band along the inside wall of the larger tube. The position of the smaller tube is maintained such that the larger tube has concave depressions between the fusion bands. Usually the heating is accomplished by a gas flame ring burner positioned under the larger tube and moved progressively along the larger tube until the desired fusion of the tubes is completed.
