  • Patent number: 6459205
Abstract: For providing a propulsion device particularly for a spacecraft, comprising a plasma chamber in which a plasma can be produced in a propellant, and a focussing arrangement for focussing an electromagnetic radiation field into a focussing region in the plasma chamber in order to produce the plasma, the propulsion device being highly efficient and controllable, it is proposed to arrange in the plasma chamber a plasma ignition arrangement whereby a material which lowers the plasma breakdown threshold in the propellant can be brought into the focussing region.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 6, 2001
Date of Patent: October 1, 2002
Assignee: Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V.
Inventors: Wolfgang Schall, Eberhard Zeyfang, Wolfgang Riede, Wilhelm Mayerhofer

  • Patent number: 5648976
Abstract: A device for generating short laser pulses comprises a laser oscillator for generating a first laser pulse, a pulse compression element which retroreflects the first laser pulse by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) as a temporally shortened pulse, a reflection element into which the temporally shortened laser pulse is retroreflected for further temporal shortening of the pulse, and an outcoupling element disposed between the pulse compression element and the reflection element for outcoupling the so shortened laser pulse.
