Abstract: Carbonitriles of the formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each an alkyl group having 1-12 C atoms and wherein one or two CH.sub.2 groups/can be groups which are not adjacent replaced by --O--, --O--CO--, --CO--O-- and/or --CH.dbd.CH--, andA.sup.1 is a H or ##STR2## is a group of the formula 1 ##STR3## wherein R.sup.3 has one of the meanings of R.sup.1, can be used as components of liquid crystal phases.

Abstract: Liquid-crystalline tercyclohexyls of the formula ##STR1## in which R is an alkyl group with 1-12 C atoms, in which one or two non-adjacent CH.sub.2 groups can be replaced by 0,X is --CN, --COOR.sup.1, --OOCR.sup.1, --COR.sup.1 or R.sup.1, andR.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1-12 C atoms, with the proviso that in the case where X=R.sup.1 at least one CH.sub.2 group in the alkyl group R is replaced by 0, and useful in liquid-crystalline dielectrics.

Abstract: New piperidine derivatives ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently is alkyl or alkoxy each of 1 to 10 C atoms, --Y--Z, F, Cl, Br or CN, and the radical R.sup.1 can also be H,Y is --CO--O--, --O--CO or a single bond,Z is --Q--R.sup.3 or alkyl having 1-10 C atoms,Q is 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene,R.sup.3 is alkyl having 1-10 C atoms, F or CN, andA is 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, and their acid addition salts,can be used as components of dielectrics for electro-optical display elements.

Abstract: Perhydrophenanthrene derivatives of formula I ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl of 1-10 C atoms and R.sub.2 is alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy each of 1-10 C atoms, H, Br, Cl or CN, have an extremely low optical anisotropy and are particularly suitable as components of liquid-crystalline dielectrics.
