  • Publication number: 20020023621
Abstract: In a device for controlling the speed of an internal combustion engine driving a utility unit with a speed control circuit for the internal combustion engine and with a load control circuit for the utility unit, the device includes sensors and an evaluation unit for detecting and evaluating the state of the system as a whole, and an arrangement for an intervention in the speed control circuit and/or the load control circuit depending on critical relevant system states in order to achieve a reduction in the system complexity and thus a better control of the dynamics of the system as a whole.

    Publication date: February 28, 2002
    Inventors: Christian Onnen, Wolfram Schmid
  • Patent number: 6138645
Abstract: In the method, the intake air for an internal combustion engine is heated both during the starting and/or warm-running phases by at least one electrically heatable heating element arranged upstream of the air inlet to the internal combustion engine and wherein the heating period for the pre-start is selected on the basis of the temperature of the cooling water of the internal combustion engine and the temperature of the unheated air taken in by the internal combustion engine, and the heating period for the post-start is selected independently of the pre-start heating time and selected solely on the basis of the cooling-water temperature.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 23, 1999
Date of Patent: October 31, 2000
    Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AG
Inventors: Peter Joppig, Friedrich Schmid, Wolfram Schmid
  • Patent number: 5894829
Abstract: A method for regulating the full-load injection quantity of a diesel internal combustion engine having a fixed steady state full-load injection quantity includes the following phases: a first transient phase, in which the full-load injection quantity is increased to a value which exceeds the steady state full-load injection quantity; a second time-limited phase, in which the full-load injection quantity is maintained at the excess level and, at the end of this phase, is reduced to the full-load injection quantity in the steady state; and a third phase, in which the full-load injection quantity in the steady state is supplied to the diesel internal combustion engine in a known way.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 4, 1997
Date of Patent: April 20, 1999
    Assignee: Daimler-Benz AG
    Inventor: Wolfram Schmid
  • Patent number: 5819705
Abstract: Process and arrangement for controlling a motor vehicle diesel engine in which the fuel injection is limited as a function of a characteristic power limitation diagram and of a characteristic smoke diagram. As a function of the engaged transmission shifting position and/or of the vehicle speed, either a characteristic normal-operation smoke diagram or a correspondingly different characteristic starting-operation smoke diagram which, at a given rotational engine speed, permits larger injection quantity, are used as the injection-quantity-limiting characteristic smoke diagram. As a result, a favorable acceleration performance is achieved, particularly during the start of engines with a relatively small displacement.

Date of Patent: October 13, 1998
    Assignee: Mercedes-Benz AG
    Inventors: Fritz Scherer, Wolfram Schmid
  • Patent number: 5680842
Abstract: In a method of controlling the fuel injection of a Diesel engine wherein injection parameters are adjusted depending on a group of input values including at least engine speed and desired engine torque, the injection timing and injection duration are adjusted by additionally using at least the time gradient of the desired engine torque among the fuel injection parameters.
