Therefore, it is possible for a user to easily add thumbnails to the XPS file.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus is provided. The image forming apparatus includes a first storage unit to store firmware, a control unit to perform a job by loading the stored firmware, a communication interface unit to receive new firmware, and an upgrade unit to install the received new firmware in the first storage unit, where the control unit, upon receiving a new job request while the new firmware is being installed, controls the upgrade unit to suspend installation of the new firmware and perform the requested new job.

The image-forming apparatus having a pause function has an image-scanning unit for moving a loaded document along a transfer path and scanning the loaded document; a pause button for inputting a pause signal requesting to pause the scanning; a control unit for determining whether the pause signal has been input, controlling the image-scanning unit to pause the scanning operations if the pause signal is inputted, and processing a portion of the image scanned until the pause of the scanning operations; and a storage unit for storing the scanned portion of the image.
