  • Publication number: 20070017275
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for measuring the position of a ferrule of a laser module. The apparatus comprises an XYZ stage, a base, a receiving portion and a laser displacement meter (LDM). The XYZ stage is used for moving in three-dimensional directions. The base has a first slot by which the base is detachably connected to the XYZ stage. The receiving portion is fixed to the base and has a second slot. The laser displacement meter is used for measuring the distance between the ferrule and the laser displacement meter. The laser displacement meter is detachably connected to the receiving portion in the second slot. Whereby, the quantitative measurement and correction to the effect of the postweld-shift (PWS) on the fiber alignment shifts in laser-welded laser module packaging is achieved. Therefore, the reliable laser modules with high yield and high performance used in low-cost lightwave transmission systems may be developed and fabricated.

  • Patent number: 7013073
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for fixing a fiber at the center of a ferrule comprising a heating stage, a temperature controller, at least one charge-coupled device, a first moving stage, a processor unit and a solder material feeder. The heating stage is used for mounting and heating the ferrule. The charge-coupled devices are used for monitoring the position of the fiber in the ferrule, and one of the charge-coupled devices is connected to the processor unit so as to measure the eccentric offset of the fiber in the ferrule. The first moving stage is used for mounting the fiber and adjusted the position of the fiber so that one end of the fiber is disposed near a inlet of the ferrule and inserting the fiber into the ferrule after alignment. The solder material feeder is used for sealing the ferrule with the solder material. The present invention also relates to a method for fixing a fiber at the center of a ferrule.

  • Publication number: 20050008309
Abstract: The present invention relates to a quadrangular-pyramid-shaped lensed fiber. One end of the fiber is ground to become quadrangular-pyramid-shaped. Small volume of the tip of the quadrangular-pyramid-shaped fiber is heated to form a semi-ellipsoidal microlens, thereby forming the quadrangular-pyramid-shaped lensed fiber. The advantage of the present invention is that the shape of the semi-ellipsoidal microlens can be controlled by adjusting the angles of the quadrangular-pyramid-shaped fiber according to the aspect ratio of the diode laser so as to enhance the coupling efficiency between an optical fiber and a diode laser.

  • Publication number: 20040208441
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for fabricating a fiber lens, comprising: (a)stripping proper length of the coating layer of a fiber to form a bare fiber portion; (b)cleaning the bare fiber portion; (c)fixing the fiber into a ferrule included in a holder; (d)providing a container filled with a layer of hydrofloride, a layer of oil and a middle mixed layer; (e)immersing the bare fiber portion in the container, wherein the bare fiber portion is etched by the layer of hydrofloride and the fiber is perpendicular to the surface of the layer of oil to form a cone; (f)melting the cone by a plurality of electric arcs to form a fiber lens; and (g)adjusting the relative position between the electric arcs and the cone to form the desired curvature and shape of the fiber lens.

  • Patent number: 6570904
Abstract: The cavity of the invention has a pumping source, a ring cavity, a planar convex lens, an optical gain medium, and/or a nonlinear medium. The laser cavity is formed by two mirrors with the same curvature. The curving surfaces of the two mirrors are coupled by a manner of face to face, whereby a space is defined as the ring cavity. The planar-convex lens is located between the pump beam and the ring cavity to work together with the two mirrors of the ring cavity to focus the pump beam. The pumping light enters the ring cavity at a desired distance of d mm from the mirror axis. The laser light also enters the ring cavity in a propagating direction nearly parallel to the mirror axis. Due to the two curving surfaces of the two mirrors, the light beam is reflected back and forth to form the 3-D figure-“8” light path. The optical gain medium and the nonlinear medium are located between the two mirrors on the light path.

  • Patent number: 6335942
Abstract: The invention is a frequency stabilized passive Q-switch laser, which has the advantages of small volume, simple structure, no need for high power voltage, etc. It has been a long time that timing jitter in conventional lasers is so large that they can not be applied to fields such as distance measurement. This invention utilizes an optical external modulation method to stabilize the repetition rate of the passive Q-switch, and thus to decrease its timing jitter. At the same time, the repetition rate of the Q-switch laser can be controlled by the same technology to meet various application needs.
