  • Publication number: 20230121670
Abstract: A method is described herein for forming a high-capacity thin-film battery. The thin-film battery utilizes a cathode containing each of lithium, ruthenium, cobalt, and oxygen. The cathode composition is synthesized as a solution of LiRu2O3 and LiCoO2 and deposited on a substrate using a physical vapor deposition sputtering technique. The cathode is then covered by an electrolyte and an anode to form a thin film battery. The cathode within the resulting thin film battery may be as-deposited and without being annealed to have an amorphous composition, or the cathode may be annealed after depositing the cathode.

  • Patent number: 10347934
Abstract: A passively impact resistant composite electrolyte composition includes an electrolyte solvent, up to 6M of an electrolyte salt, and shear thickening ceramic particles having an outer surface. The shear thickening ceramic particles have an absolute zeta potential of greater than ±40 mV. The shear thickening ceramic particles have a polydispersity index of no greater than 0.1, and an average particle size of in a range of 50 nm to 1 um. The ceramic particles have bonded to the outer surface steric stabilizing polymers. The steric stabilizing polymers have a chain length of from 0.5 nm to 100 nm. A passively impact resistant laminated battery and a method of making the electrolyte composition are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 10199633
Abstract: An electrode and a related method of manufacture are provided. The electrode includes a self-aligning active material having short fiber powders with a cylindrical morphology to increase the packing density from 0.74 to nearly 0.91. The short fiber powders self-align during a slurring coating process as a result of shear forces between a die and a foil. The resulting coating includes parallel short fibers in a closed packed arrangement, providing an increased volumetric capacity of at least approximately 17%.

  • Patent number: 9448219
Abstract: One aspect of the invention relates to an ultrathin micro-electromechanical chemical sensing device which uses swelling or straining of a reactive organic material for sensing. In certain embodiments, the device comprises a contact on-off switch chemical sensor. For example, the device can comprises a small gap separating two electrodes, wherein the gap can be closed as a result of the swelling or stressing of an organic polymer coating on one or both sides of the gap. In certain embodiments, the swelling or stressing is due to the organic polymer reacting with a target analyte.
