Publication number: 20030043221Abstract: The amount of time required to perform ink drop detections may be substantially reduced by characterizing which nozzles stand a greater likelihood of failure and by performing drop detections more frequently on those nozzles as compared to nozzles that have been identified as having less of a risk of failure. Continuous drop detection on those nozzles that have been identified as standing less of a risk of failure may be substantially omitted, without negatively impacting the quality of a printed output in a substantial manner. By selectively performing drop detections on those nozzles that stand a greater likelihood of failure, it may be possible to both reduce the amount of time required to test the nozzles as well as substantially any negative impact on print quality caused by these nozzles. The characterization of the nozzles as standing a greater likelihood of failure may be based upon the selected printmode.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 29, 2001Publication date: March 6, 2003Inventors: Ramon Vega, Marc Serra, Xavier Bruch

Publication number: 20030038856Abstract: A system and method for substantially optimizing print quality or throughput based upon user preferences through use of a left spittoon to perform servicing operations on the printhead of a printer. By virtue of the fact that print quality is inversely proportional to throughput, sacrificing one aspect yields an improvement in the other aspect. When a certain printmode is selected, e.g., draft, print, or the like, the throughput associated with printing according to the selected printmode may vary. Accordingly, a user may select to improve either the print quality, the throughput, or a combination thereof through implementation of the auxiliary spittoon to perform servicing operations on the printhead at various times during a printing operation.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 21, 2001Publication date: February 27, 2003Inventors: Ramon Vega, Xevier Girones, Xavier Bruch

Publication number: 20030030690Abstract: A method for correcting deviations from the normal performance of the service station by adapting the level of servicing a printhead receives based upon the age of the service station. For relatively newer service stations, the service stations may be caused to perform relatively less servicing operations on the printheads to thereby conserve ink and relatively increase the life of the service station and the printheads. For relatively older service stations, the service stations may be caused to perform relatively heavier servicing operations on the printheads to substantially compensate for the deleterious effects arising from the aging of the service station.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2001Publication date: February 13, 2003Inventors: Ramon Vega, Xavier Girones, Xavier Bruch

Patent number: 6513904Abstract: A method for servicing an inkjet printhead without removing the printhead from a carriage of the printer, wherein a controlled pressure differential is generated across the nozzle plate of the printhead to cause the formation of a controlled puddle of ink on the outside of the nozzle plate. Ink is then fired into the puddle through the nozzles of the printhead. The puddle may then be drawn back into the printhead through the nozzles. Alternatively the puddle is generated, is maintained for a predetermined period of time and then is withdrawn into the printhead without ink being fired from the nozzles.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2000Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Christopher Taylor, Xavier Girones, Antoni Murcia, Xavier Bruch

Publication number: 20030016268Abstract: The present invention is embodied in a system and method for producing efficient ink drop overlap filled with a pseudo hexagonal grid pattern. In general, the present invention can include an inkjet printhead assembly that incorporates a preprogrammed correction scheme or schemes [1-n] (herein correction scheme will refer to all applications), for correcting systematic ink drop placement errors of the inkjet printhead. The printing system of the present invention uses a unique ink dot pattern, called a pseudo-hexagonal close pack system. The present invention optimizes the addressable grid for dot placement, pseudo hexagonal close pack system, with an efficient geometry for packing circles to fill an area, similar to the hexagonal close pack system. However, the present invention in creating dots on a non-symmetric grid is supported by available software and is not computationally complex.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2001Publication date: January 23, 2003Inventors: Mark S. Patent number: 6439688Abstract: A technique of forming a bar of a bar code on print media by a printing device having a plurality of colorants. Each one of the individual bars has a leading edge and a trailing edge that help to define a central region of the bar. The relative locations of the leading edge and trailing edge are determined and a first colorant, usually black, is deposited at the leading edge. A composite of the first colorant, and the other printhead colorants, are deposited in the central region while the first colorant is deposited at the trailing edge. A bar of a bar code produced by this technique has a clearly defined leading and trailing edge for bar code readers to measure while the central region of the bar includes a composite of colorants.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2000Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Juan Carlos Vives, Ronald D Stephens, Jr., Xavier Bruch

Patent number: 6390600Abstract: An ink jet device for printing onto a print medium and a method for modulating the ink discharged from the ink jet device. The ink jet device has a first fluid path, a second fluid path, and a discharge opening provided between the first and second fluid paths. The first fluid path possesses at least one heat generating element to substantially heat and vaporize a portion of printer fluid located in the vicinity of the heat generating elements. By virtue of the printer fluid vaporization, pressure is created in the printer fluid to cause a portion of the printer fluid located upstream of the vaporized section to move in a direction generally toward the second fluid path. The at least one heat generating element is activated to push a desired section of the printer fluid toward the discharge opening. The flow of the printer fluid through the second fluid path may be substantially impeded to thus force a desired amount of printer fluid to be ejected through the discharge opening.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2001Date of Patent: May 21, 2002Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Ramon Vega, Xavier Bruch

Patent number: 6270187Abstract: It is first determined whether any printing element of a printhead has failed. If so, functions of the failed element are reassigned to other elements. Some aspects of the invention do this in such a way as to maintain essentially single-pass operation. Ordinarily the reassigned functions are applied to control operation of the head or heads, to print images on a print medium, and functions of the apparatus and method are effected automatically by program instructions—in nonvolatile memory. One approach to the reassignment includes removing from service all printing elements between the failed element and a nearer end of the head, inclusive—and then preferably operating all remaining in-service elements as a shorter printhead. If the printhead operates in conjunction with a print-medium advance mechanism, then also preferably each operation of that mechanism is shortened to correspond to a height of the shorter head.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1998Date of Patent: August 7, 2001Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Antonio Murcia, Xavier Bruch, Chris Taylor, Xavier Girones, LluĂs Vinals
