  • Patent number: 7912113
Abstract: A technique for determining a received signal strength indicator of a target base station at a subscriber station includes performing a discrete Fourier transform on a received signal to provide a transformed signal. In this case, the transformed signal occupies one or more segments of a channel and the one or more segments each include multiple subcarriers. A shift-n cross-correlation is calculated based on the transformed signal and a preamble sequence of the target base station to provide a coarse received signal strength indicator for the target base station.

  • Publication number: 20100317343
Abstract: A wireless terminal receives signaling information, pertaining to a reference signal transmission in at least one specifically designated sub frame, the signaling information including a list, the list including base station identities. The terminal determines, from at least one of the base station identities in the list, the time-frequency resources associated with a reference signal transmission intended for observed time difference of arrival (OTDOA) measurements from a transmitting base station associated with said one base station identity. The time of arrival of a transmission from the transmitting base station, relative to reference timing, is measured. The wireless terminal can receive a command from a serving cell to start performing inter-frequency OTDOA measurement on a frequency layer containing reference signals, the frequency layer distinct from the serving frequency layer, the serving frequency layer not containing positioning reference signals.

  • Publication number: 20100260154
Abstract: A base station communicates a positioning reference signal (PRS) to wireless communication devices over a downlink in a wireless communication system by encoding a PRS into a first set of transmission resources, encoding other information into a second set of transmission resources, multiplexing the two sets of resources into a subframe such that the first set of resources is multiplexed into at least a portion of a first set of orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) symbols based on an identifier associated with the base station and the second set of resources is multiplexed into a second set of OFDM symbols. Upon receiving the subframe, a wireless communication device determines which set of transmission resources contains the PRS based on the identifier associated with the base station that transmitted the subframe and processes the set of resources containing the PRS to estimate timing (e.g., time of arrival) information.

  • Publication number: 20100195583
Abstract: A downlink subframe on a single downlink carrier supports physical layer acknowledgment signaling for multiple physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmissions. The physical layer acknowledgement signaling may take the form of physical hybrid ARQ indicator channel (PHICH) signaling. A base unit reserves resource elements groups (REGs) for default PHICH signaling of default PUSCH transmissions. The base unit reserves control channel elements (CCEs) for physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) signaling. A CCE contains multiple interleaved REGs. The base unit takes any unreserved CCEs and maps those CCEs for physical layer acknowledgement signaling of additional PUSCH transmissions.

  • Publication number: 20100110964
Abstract: A relay design backward compatible with existing wireless communication networks. The invention provides details of apparatus and methods to enable operation of inband relays. Using a grant-based inhibit mechanism, a Relay and an eNB can efficiently cooperate to improve the performance by allowing one of either UE or the Relay to transmit on the uplink. Similarly, the UE overrides any pre-determined schedule (i.e., absence of Reference Signals) by searching for a scheduling grant and if the UE find the scheduling grant, the UE can assume that the Relay has overridden the pre-determined schedule temporarily.

  • Publication number: 20090280747
Abstract: A mobile device estimates a data symbol from a received signal by using one or more interference cancellation algorithms. For one interference cancellation algorithm, the mobile device calculates a correction factor by estimating a Doppler speed and a time difference between a first time interval like a preamble symbol and a second time interval like any symbol of interest in an assigned data allocation in the data zone. Using the correction factor, the mobile device updates outdated interference information. The mobile device cancels interference in the received signal distorted by co-channel interference by using the updated interference information. Also, the mobile device is configured to combine results of multiple interference cancellation algorithms based on the applicability of the individual interference cancellation algorithms in particular scenarios.

  • Patent number: 7599327
Abstract: Access to a wireless communication system (100) by a subscriber station (101-103) is facilitated by selecting (705) an access sequence from a set of sequences that have been identified to have a low average of peak-to-average-power-ratios of access signals generated by the set of sequences and also based on a good cross-correlation of the access signals; forming (714) the access waveform by generating an access signal using the access sequence and appending in the time domain a cyclic prefix to the access signal; and transmitting (715) the access waveform. In some implementations, the access waveform is cyclically shifted (820) before the cyclic prefix is appended, and in some implementations, the signal is transmitted (710, 810) in a randomly selected sub-band of an access interval.
