  • Publication number: 20050041629
Abstract: An improved method (10) is provided for supporting variable data rates between a transmitter and a receiver in a code division multiple access (CDMA) data communication system. The method includes: providing a control channel (12) and at least one application data channel between the transmitter and the receiver, transmitting user data (14) from the transmitter via the application data channel to the receiver; transmitting a data rate indicator (16) from the transmitter via the control channel to the receiver; where the data rate indicator is indicative of the data rate at which the user data is transmitted by the transmitter; and using the data rate indicator to decode the user data (18) at the receiver.

  • Publication number: 20040196805
Abstract: A common channel transmitter at the base station produces a first carrier signal to sequentially communicate, via diverse transmission antennas, a pilot reference signal to mobile stations. A dedicated channel transmitter produces a second carrier that communicates voice and signal traffic to the mobile station. At the base station a sequencing switch sequentially couples the common channel transmitter to each of the transmission antennas for sequentially transmitting the first carrier modulated with a pilot reference signal. A plurality of diverse receiving antennas, each corresponding to a respective one of the transmitter antennas, receive signals from the mobile station. The base station receiver provides respective signal to noise estimations indicating one of the antennas has a signal to noise value that is better than the signal to noise value provide by any other antenna. The base station uses this antenna for the dedicated channel that is transmitted to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6792034
Abstract: A method reduces interference adaptively in a CDMA receiver. A baseband signal is demodulated to determine target symbols. The baseband signal is also demodulated to estimate interfering symbols. The interfering symbols are modulated to generate a cancellation signal, and the cancellation signal is subtracted from the base band signal to reduce interference in the target symbols.

  • Patent number: 6781973
Abstract: A base station controller and method for controlling a forward link power level in a CDMA cellular system provides an adjustment threshold. The method includes the steps of defining the adjustment threshold for the forward link power level, and receiving an inner-loop power control command from a remote transmitter. The power control command defines a request for an incremental adjustment in the forward link power level. The method further provides for defining the forward link power level based on the adjustment threshold and the request. Tracking a cumulative power adjustment of the forward link power level allows the base station controller to avoid continuous increases in transmitted power when the power commands are actually the result of multipath effects. The result is an improvement in overall cell operation.

  • Patent number: 5710765
Abstract: A TDMA system with a TDMA frame format that requires no guard time, or with a maximum guard time of one clock cycle of the high timing base is applied to a network with a fixed central base, or headend, and remote units, called Premises Interface Devices (PIDs), which have a fixed communication media, such as a cable, between the headend and PID. This TDMA system is particularly useful for increasing system efficiency for CATV applications. The system method works as follows: a remote PID attempting to access the system sends a short data burst to the headend. By measuring the time difference between the time reference and the beginning of the uplink signal received, the headend will send timing correction/adjustment information to the PID. The PID then adjusts the timing of its data bursts, optionally sends a trial message and, once a verified correct transmission is acknowledged by the headend, sends regular data.

  • Patent number: 5600682
Abstract: A system and method for the transmission and recovery of asynchronous data. For instantaneous synchronization, the receiver is equipped with a high frequency timing base which has a far higher frequency than either the data-generating or transmitting rate. The receiver clock is instantly synchronized upon detection of the first transition of the incoming data packet. Data packet verification can be conducted and data processed with minimal loss of data.

  • Patent number: 5485630
Abstract: A Node "0" device for a Consumer Electronics Coaxial Bus (CXBUS) network is provided. The network has a plurality of internal cables coupled to a source of up-link signals located within a first frequency band. The up-link signals include first audio/video (A/V) signals (which may be digital or analog) and control signals. External cables provide second A/V signals located within a second frequency band. An active input section is coupled to the internal cables. The input section individually filters and amplifies the up-link signals and combines the amplified signals. The input section provides a down-link signal path. A block converter coupled to the input section converts the first A/V signal from the first frequency band to the second frequency band, and provides the converted signals at its output port. A control channel regenerator coupled to the input section receives the control signal, generates a down-link control signal, and transmits the down-link control signal to the input section.

  • Patent number: 5452291
Abstract: An apparatus for transmitting data from a first device to a second device is provided. The invention is suitable for use in a system having first and second communications media. The apparatus includes a network interface coupled to the first medium for receiving and examining data from the first device. A clustering facility is provided for coupling the first device directly to the network interface and for selectively coupling the second device to the network interface. The network interface identifies the second device as being coupled to either the clustering facility or the second medium. The apparatus transmits the data from the network interface to the second device by way of the clustering facility, if the network interface identifies the second device as being coupled to the clustering facility. The apparatus routes the data from the network interface to the second device by way of the second medium if the network interface identifies the second device as being coupled to the second medium.
