Patent number: 11557314Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to magnetic recording systems, and more particularly to a magnetic recording system with a current-assisted write head. The write head comprises a main pole, a trailing shield disposed above the main pole, a trailing gap disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield, a side shield surrounding three sides of the main pole, the side shield being in contact with and disposed below the trailing shield and the trailing gap, and a side gap disposed between the side shield and each of the three sides of the main pole. The side gap comprises a non-magnetic electrically-conducting material to dissipate heat away from the main pole, lowering the resistance and temperature rise due to heating. The trailing gap may further comprise a non-magnetic electrically-conducting material. The write head may have a two terminal or three terminal connection configuration.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2019Date of Patent: January 17, 2023Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Muhammad Asif Bashir, Zhigang Bai, Yaguang Wei, Terence Lam, Youfeng Zheng, Changqing Shi, Michael Kuok San Ho, Xinjiang Shen, Suping Song, Lijie Guan, Venkatesh Chembrolu

Patent number: 11049514Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic media drive employing a magnetic recording head. The head includes a main pole at a media facing surface (MFS), a trailing shield at the MFS, and a MAMR stack disposed between the main pole and the trailing shield at the MFS. The MAMR stack includes a seed layer and at least one magnetic layer. The seed layer is fabricated from a thermally conductive material having electrical resistivity lower than that of the main pole. The seed layer has a stripe height greater than a stripe height of the at least one magnetic layer. With the extended seed layer, the bias current from the trailing shield to the main pole spreads further away from the MFS along the extended seed layer before flowing into the main pole, reducing temperature rise at or near the MAMR stack, leading to improved write head reliability.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2020Date of Patent: June 29, 2021Assignee: WESTERN DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Michael Kuok San Ho, Yunfei Ding, Zhigang Bai, Yaguang Wei, Terence Lam, Goncalo Marcos Baião De Albuquerque, Xinjiang Shen, Feng Q. MAGNETIC RECORDING HEAD HAVING THERMAL FLY HEIGHT CONTROL ELEMENT WITH NEAR ZERO MAGNETOMOTIVE FORCE
Publication number: 20150213820Abstract: A magnetic recording head with thermal fly height control, wherein the heating element is configured to eliminate magnetic field effects on the writing pole, which would cause otherwise cause non-symmetric writing or pole erasure. Non-symmetric writing is a phenomenon wherein magnetic writing favors one direction over another, thereby causing a timing shift in recorded data. The pole erasure is a phenomenon wherein the erasure would occur even without write current. The heating element can be formed as a plurality of electrically conductive layers separated by a non-magnetic, electrically insulating layer such as alumina. The electrically conductive layers are configured so that current flows in opposite directions through each of the electrically conductive layers such that any magnetic field generated by the current flow through one electrically conductive layer is cancelled out by a magnetic field from another electrically conductive layer.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 28, 2014Publication date: July 30, 2015Applicant: HGST NETHERLANDS B.V.Inventors: Venkatesh Chembrolu, Wen-Chien D. Patent number: 8634167Abstract: A magnetic head for data recording having a pair of heating elements that self regulate in response to temperature to distribute heat for thermal actuation. The head includes a first heating element located adjacent to the read sensor and away from the writer, and a second heating element located adjacent to the writer. The first and second heating elements have different coefficients of thermal resistance that cause the heating of the second heating element to increase relative to that of the first heating element when the overall temperature increases or when power provided by a power source increases. There, thereby prevents the read sensor from extending too much and possibly contacting the disk.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2011Date of Patent: January 21, 2014Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Wen-Chien D. Hsiao, Xinjiang Shen

The structure having a low coefficient of thermal expansion has a shape that substantially conforms to the shape of the write coil, such that both the write coil and the structure having a low coefficient of thermal expansion have a central portion that is located closest to the air bearing surface and outer end portions that bend away from the air bearing surface to form a horseshoe shape.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2012Publication date: January 2, 2014Applicant: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Wen-Chien D. Patent number: 8259412Abstract: A heating element for use in a thermal fly height control magnetic recording head of a magnetic data recording system. The heating element has a centrally disposed portion with a straight front edge that is recessed by a substantially constant distance, and has first and second side portions that taper away from the air bearing surface. The side portions preferably taper away from the air bearing surface by an angle of 20 to 45 degrees. The center portion of the front edge is spaced from the air bearing surface by a distance D and has a width W, such that W is 1.5 to 2.5 (or about 2) times D. D is typically 2-6 um to have good heater efficiency while being large enough to not over heat the heater. The heating element has an overall width WW and a overall depth HH from the air bearing surface such that WW is 1.5-2.5 (or about 2) times HH.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2010Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Wen-Chien D.
