  • Publication number: 20130061233
Abstract: A computer in which a single queue is used to implement all of the scheduling functionalities of shared computer resources in a multi-core computing environment. The length of the queue is determined uniquely by the relationship between the number of available work units and the number of available processing cores. Each work unit in the queue is assigned an execution token. The value of the execution token represents an amount of computing resources allocated for the work unit. Work units having non-zero execution tokens are processed using the computing resources allocate to each one of them. When a running work unit is finished, suspended or blocked, the value of the execution token of at least one other work unit in the queue is adjusted based on the amount of computing resources released by the running work unit.

  • Publication number: 20120297395
Abstract: A system and method for managing the processing of work units being processed on a computer system having shared resources e.g. multiple processing cores, memory, bandwidth, etc. The system comprises a job scheduler for scheduling access to the shared resources for the work units, and an event trap for capturing resource related allocation events. The event trap is adapted to dynamically adjust the amount of availability associated with each shared resource identified by the resource related allocation event. The allocation event may define a resource release or a resource request. The event trap may increase the amount of availability for allocation events defining a resource release, and decrement the amount of availability for allocation events defining a resource request. The job scheduler allocates resources to the work units using a real time amount of availability of the shared resources in order to maximize a consumption of the shared resources.

  • Patent number: 7324995
Abstract: A method for retrieving and modifying data elements on a shared medium following request from multiple client computers, such that data retrieval transactions on a data element, originating from one or more clients, are not compromised by data update transactions on the same data element originating from other clients. The shared medium controller receives from multiple clients transaction requests for reading or writing a data element stored on the shared medium. The transactions requests are added to an execution queue in order. All read transaction requests are then retrieved and executed in parallel, up to a write transaction request on the data element. The write transaction request is then executed while all incoming read transaction requests for the same data element are queued until the write transaction request is completed.

  • Publication number: 20050154841
Abstract: The data storage system comprises a scalable number of routing processors (RPs) through which clients of a network communicate. The storage system also includes a scalable number of storage processors (SPs) connected to a scalable number of storage units (SUs). This data storage system provides a new and hybrid approach which lies in between conventional NAS and SAN environments. It creates a unified and scalable storage pool accessible through a single consistent directory without the need for a metadata controller (MDC). There is thus no table lookup at a central node and no single point of failure. It allows a dissociation of the relationship between the physical path and the actual location where the data objects are stored.

  • Publication number: 20050108300
Abstract: A method for retrieving data elements from a shared medium by a client computer is provided. The shared medium maintains a main list of data version information associated with each data element, while the client maintains another locally-stored list containing all previously retrieved data elements associated with their respective data version. The client computer checks whether there is a record for a data element in the locally-stored list and if so, sends the data version associated with it to the shared medium. The shared medium compares the data version received with the data version stored in its main list and if the two match, sends a confirmation to the client computer. If the data versions do not match, the shared medium sends a new copy of the data element and a new data version to the originating client computer, such that the client computer updates its locally-stored list.
