Patent number: 8434299Abstract: An exhaust system (16) of a diesel engine (10) has a diesel particulate filter (18) for treating exhaust gas. When trapped soot has accumulated to an extent that may affect performance of the filter, an engine control system (12) forces combustion of trapped soot by increasing exhaust back-pressure using a control device (20) such as a back-pressure control valve or vanes of a variable geometry turbocharger.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2003Date of Patent: May 7, 2013Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLC.Inventors: Xinqun Gui, Guoqing Zhang, Xinlei Wang

Patent number: 7168396Abstract: A compression ignition engine (10) has a control system (24) for processing data, one or more cylinders (16), a fueling system (18), and a variable valve actuation mechanism (20). Control system (24) develops both fueling data for fueling the engine and timing data representing time during the engine cycle for intake valve closure to a cylinder that will endow the cylinder with an effective compression ratio (ECR) appropriate to current engine operation for causing auto-ignition to occur near or at top dead center in the engine cycle. During a compression upstroke, the cylinder is fueled according to the fueling data and intake valve closure for the cylinder is performed according to the timing data. This creates an air-fuel mixture that is increasingly compressed to the point of auto-ignition near or at top dead center.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2005Date of Patent: January 30, 2007Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: Tytus R. Patent number: 6978604Abstract: A control system (FIG. 4) for controlling regeneration of a DPF comprises a favorable-condition-based control section (52), a regular control section (54), and a regeneration termination control section (56). Section (54) initiates regeneration when the actual soot loading of the DPF becomes sufficiently large to mandate initiation of regeneration. Section (52) initiates regeneration when the actual soot loading reaches an amount less than the amount at which section (54) mandates regeneration, provided that selected engine operating conditions disclose conditions favorable for regeneration. Section (56) terminates regeneration when soot loading is reduced to some minimum amount or when conditions for continuing regeneration become unfavorable. By burning trapped soot during favorable conditions, the mandatory regeneration is postponed. This can lower the average amount of trapped soot in the CDPF, thereby lowering the average back-pressure on the engine.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2003Date of Patent: December 27, 2005Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: Xinlei Wang, Xinqun Gui, Shouxian Ren, Guoqing Zhang

Patent number: 6829890Abstract: An engine control system (22) of a diesel engine (20) that powers a motor vehicle processes data in execution of a strategy (FIG. 4) to provide control of both timing and duration of forced regeneration of a diesel particulate filter (42). The overall strategy is a hybrid of model-based and closed-loop control strategies. Redundant elements of the strategy (FIG. 6) determine when forced regeneration is called for. Forced regeneration is initiated by retarding the timing of the start of main fuel injection (100). Fueling is then adjusted (98) both to enhance catalytic action and to make the process transparent to a driver of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2002Date of Patent: December 14, 2004Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, LLCInventors: Xinqun Gui, Steven P.
