    Abstract: Disclosed is the use of certain alkanolamines for use in hair treatment compositions as a replacement for some or all ammonium hydroxide. When used as hair colorant alkalizers, these derivatives demonstrate reduced hair fiber damage, effective color lifting, and significant improvement in cytotoxicity and malodor compared to well known replacements for ammonium hydroxide.
