  • Patent number: 6549594
Abstract: A method for timing phase recovery including the steps of first, estimating an open-eye sequence of a received signal, second, estimating a channel response using the open-eye sequence, and third, correlating the estimated channel response with an ideal channel response to determine the peak correlation location. The peak correlation location corresponds to the recovered timing phase. A system including means for estimating an open-eye sequence of a received signal, a channel estimator and a correlator is also provided. The channel estimator is used for estimating a channel response using the open-eye sequence and the received signal. The correlator is used for correlating the estimated channel response with an ideal channel response to determine the peak correlation location, the peak correlation location corresponding to the recovered timing phase.

  • Patent number: 6522882
Abstract: A method and apparatus for locating, in relation to a plurality of cell sites, a mobile cellular transceiver in a conversation state. The method includes the steps of transmitting from one of the plurality of cell sites to the mobile transceiver a handoff signal for causing the mobile transceiver to continually transmit a known beacon signal while still in the conversation state, at at least some of the plurality of base stations, receiving the known beacon signal and measuring the time at which the known beacon signal was received, and calculating the location of the mobile transceiver from the respective locations of each of the at least some of the plurality of cell sites and the respective times at which the beacon signal was received at each of the at least some of the plurality of cell sites.

  • Patent number: 6510186
Abstract: A time delay estimation method including the steps of first, estimating a channel response from a received signal, and second, determining a time delay estimate by correlating the estimated channel response with an ideal channel response. Further, a system including a channel estimator and a correlator is provided. The channel estimator is used for estimating a channel response from a received signal and the correlator is used for estimating a time delay using the channel response and an ideal channel response.

  • Patent number: 6493380
Abstract: A method for estimating a time delay including the steps of first, estimating a channel spectrum from a received signal and a known reference signal, second, extracting a virtual array structure from the estimated channel spectrum, and third, determining the signal time delay using the virtual array structure. Further, a system for estimating a time delay including a channel spectrum estimator, means for extracting a virtual array structure and means for determining the time delay is provided. The channel spectrum estimator is used for estimating a channel spectrum from a received signal and a known reference signal. The means for extracting a virtual array structure uses the estimated channel spectrum. The means for determining the time delay uses the virtual array structure.

  • Publication number: 20020067701
Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention provide an advanced access channel through which wireless terminals can access an access network. Other embodiments provide a method of performing power control using a shared power control channel. The shared power control channel is also used in conjunction with the advanced access channel to provide an acknowledgement mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6353744
Abstract: The invention is directed to positioning with low geometrical dilution of position (GDOP). Generally, the invention is a method for positioning including the steps of transmitting a asynchronous signal from a mobile to at least one base station; receiving the asynchronous signal at each base station; for each base station, determining a spherical line of position for the mobile using the received non-synchronous signal; and positioning the mobile using the spherical lines of position. The invention is a position location system which has the merits of both spherical and hyperbolic positioning systems while avoiding their drawbacks. The invention is less sensitive to GDOP and the mathematical model is easier to handle than the known hyperbolic system. The mathematical model embodied in the invention is equivalent to a convex quadratic probing subject to an ice-cream cone constraint. The invention also embodies an efficient algorithm for this optimization model.

  • Patent number: 6054941
Abstract: An apparatus (100) and method for inputting ideographic characters. The apparatus (100) has an input pad with a predetermined number of input keys (102, . . . 111). Theoretically, at least a stroke and a radical are mapped to each input key (102, . . . 111). After the apparatus (100) receives at least a first and a second input key entry, based on a number of input key entries received, the apparatus (100) determines whether the first input key entry is one of the following: a stroke and a radical. Thus, the method solves the ambiguity problems caused by such a mapping of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6009444
Abstract: A text input device (10) and a method of data entry for entering text in a language (e.g. Zhuyin phonetic Chinese), in which a character is representable as a first symbol selected from a first subset of symbols and a second symbol selected from a second subset of symbols, where the first and second subsets are mutually exclusive. A first key on which is displayed a first subset of symbols is activated (e.g. any one of keys 1-6). A candidate first symbol is displayed in response to the step of activating the first key. A second key is activated on which is displayed a second subset of symbols (e.g. any one of keys 7-0). The candidate first symbol is fixed and a candidate second symbol is displayed in response to activating the second key. A third key can be activated (e.g. any one of keys 7-0), on which is displayed a further subset of symbols, whereupon the candidate second symbol is fixed.

  • Patent number: 5952942
Abstract: A method of text entry into a device by activating keys of a keypad (16), where a key represents various characters. Input is delivered to a processor (30) corresponding to the keys activated. A dictionary (33) is searched for candidate combinations of characters corresponding to the keys activated. The candidate combinations are rank ordered, for example using language model data and feedback (14, 38) is provided to a user indicating at least a highest rank ordered candidate combination.
