Patent number: 7918232Abstract: A process for the on line production of cigarette filters comprises the steps of conveying a continuous thin flexible substrate past a source of smoke altering particulate material, such as adsorbents, catalysts and flavorants. An electrostatic charge is applied onto the substrate upstream of the source of particulate material. A layer of particulate material from the source is deposited onto the substrate with the thickness of the layer depending upon the strength of the electrostatic charge. The coated substrate is then cut into pieces, and the pieces are placed into the cavities between spaced apart filter components. In an alternative process, filter paper is coated with smoke altering particulate material by electrostatic deposition techniques, and spaced apart filter components are placed onto the particulate coated filter paper which is then folded around the filter components.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2006Date of Patent: April 5, 2011Assignee: Philip Morris USA Inc.Inventors: Georgios D. Karles, Henry M. Dante, Xuan M. Pham, Barry S. Smith

Patent number: 6474805Abstract: A printer and transport assembly includes a transport conveyor for receiving individual blanks and continuously conveying the blanks in a downstream direction. A digital high speed printer is positioned directly above the transport conveyor downstream from where the blanks are received on the transport conveyor for printing high quality indicia on the individual blanks as they are continuously conveyed downstream. A blank drying arrangement receives printed blanks from the transport conveyor and moves the blanks in spaced relationship over a course of travel of sufficient length so as to sufficiently dry the printed indicia on the blanks. Ultimately, the dried printed blanks may be collected in a stack. Packaging, greeting cards, stickers, labels and coupons, for example, may be printed with the printer and transport assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2001Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: Henry M. Patent number: 6349728Abstract: A puff-on-demand cigarette smoking apparatus for decreasing unnecessary tobacco burning as well as decreasing the generation of side stream smoke. The portable cigarette smoking apparatus can be used to smoke traditional cigarettes and includes a reusable lighter box housing including an aperture into which an end of a cigarette to be smoked is adapted to be inserted into. After the cigarette is inserted through the aperture, the cigarette is directed into a cigarette extinguishing sleeve. The cigarette smoking system includes an actuable trigger which is operably connected to a cigarette advancing mechanism for advancing the cigarette a preset distance along the cigarette extinguishing sleeve into the lighter box housing upon actuation of the trigger. As a result, a portion of the cigarette is advanced beyond the cigarette extinguishing sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2000Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventor: Xuan M. Patent number: 5570779Abstract: Step-shaped innerframes and blanks for forming such innerframes are provided to permit shorter than conventional cigarettes to be packaged in a conventionally sized hinged lid box. A front panel is foldably connected to a substantially perpendicular step bottom panel which in turn is foldably connected to a substantially perpendicular back panel, such that the front and back panels extend in opposite directions and lie in substantially parallel planes to form an integral step configuration. When the inner frame is located within a hinged lid box, a receptacle is formed for a short cigarette bundle. A lower receptacle is defined below the step bottom panel to store discarded cigarettes which are inserted into the lower receptacle via a hole located in one of the box walls and any associated underlying innerframe panel.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1995Date of Patent: November 5, 1996Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventors: James B. Draucker, Charles D. Hansen, Jr., Reginald W. Newsome, Xuan M. Pham

Patent number: 5503268Abstract: The disclosure relates to containers and blanks for forming the containers. The disclosed methods involve forming the containers, loading the containers with cylindrical articles such as cigarettes and dispensing the articles from the containers. The containers may include a box and a telescoping closure sleeve for selectably exposing a circular aperture in a side wall of the box. An inner wall of the box provides a curved surface for aligning an individual article or cigarette so that it may be dispensed through the aperture. The methods and structures disclosed here permit the container to be accessed and the articles or cigarettes to be dispensed, one at a time, by manipulating the container with one hand. A window in the sleeve permits the contents of the container to be viewed through an opening in the box.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 1993Date of Patent: April 2, 1996Assignee: Philip Morris IncorporatedInventor: Xuan M.
