  • Patent number: 9970523
Abstract: A torque converter includes a housing, and an impeller shell disposed within the housing. The impeller shell has a back wall, and a plurality of fins radially arranged and extending outwardly from the back wall. The torque converter further includes a backing hub rigidly coupled to the back wall of the impeller shell. The backing hub has a barrier element extending therefrom. A free end of the barrier element is disposed proximal to the housing to restrict a flow of fluid therebetween.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 28, 2015
Date of Patent: May 15, 2018
    Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.

  • Patent number: 8960227
Abstract: A tank for a hydraulic fluid has a housing with opposed end walls and side walls defining an interior chamber. A primary baffle is disposed inside the housing and divides the interior chamber into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber, with a primary gap between the primary baffle and the housing fluidly communicating between the inlet chamber and the outlet chamber. The primary baffle further defines a contact surface facing the inlet chamber and has first and second weirs which extend into the inlet chamber. A first fluid inlet fluidly communicates with the inlet chamber and is oriented along a first inlet axis that intersects the contact surface, while a fluid outlet communicates with the outlet chamber. The tank produces an interior flow that mixes and deaerates the fluid as it travels from the first fluid inlet to the fluid outlet.

  • Patent number: 7022380
Abstract: Method and apparatus for coating a traveling paper web includes a coater head. The coater head includes an inlet for receiving fresh coating material which is introduced into a mixing chamber. A looped flow path is established within the coater head which includes a feed channel extending from the mixing chamber and leading into a coating chamber where one portion of the coating material proceeds in the direction of the rotating backing roll. The aqueous slurry of coating material near the downstream end of the coating chamber enters a recirculation channel from which it is directed through a plurality of flow metering orifices back into the mixing chamber.

  • Publication number: 20050051084
Abstract: Apparatus (20, 20b) for coating a traveling paper web (w) includes a coater head (22, 22b) for applying a film of an aqueous slurry of coating material either directly to the paper web, which is supported on the surface of a rotating backing roll (14, 14b), or to the surface of a backing roll (14, 14c?) which in turn applies the film to the paper web (w) which is nipped between two backing rolls. The coater head (22, 22b-d) includes an inlet (24, 24b) for receiving fresh coating material which is introduced into a mixing chamber (26, 26b). A looped flow path is established within the coater head which includes a feed channel (28, 28b) extending from the mixing chamber (26, 26b) and leading into a coating chamber (18, 18b) where one portion of the coating material proceeds in the direction of the rotating backing roll while another portion of the coating material exits the feed channel in the opposite direction over a baffle (30, 30b).

  • Patent number: 5824369
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating a traveling paper web includes a coating applicator disposed in movably-controlled spaced adjacency with the paper web, which is supported on a rotating backing roll. The coating applicator permits a controlled introduction of a fresh portion of an aqueous slurry of coating material which is mixed with a recirculated portion of coating material in a controlled manner to prevent the formation of large vortices within the coating applicator. The coating material flows successively through mixing, convergent, and recirculation channels, all of which are defined on one side thereof by a distinct surface of a flow stabilizer which is positioned centrally in a cavity in the coating apparatus.
