  • Patent number: 7724834
Abstract: A system and method for a simplified Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding (203) for MIMO systems is provided. The full ML decoding gives the lower bound of the decoding for CC coded MIMO systems. However, the computation cost is too high to be implemented in real system. Many alternative methods have been proposed for the decoding. Among them, weighted Zero Forcing (WZF) is one that can give affordable performance with reasonable computation complexity but there are several dB of performance gap for the WZF decoding and ML decoding. This present invention discloses a decoding system and method having improved performance over WZF decoding with affordable implementation complexity.

  • Publication number: 20090147876
Abstract: A system and method is provided wherein channel state information assisted MIMO transmission based on singular value decomposition (SVD) (204) (304) simplifies the decoding process. The present invention is a joint source and channel coding system and method for robust wireless multimedia communication. Using the fact that SVD redistributes the channel energy in a descending way, the base layer of the Fine-Grained-Scalability (FGS) (208) is mapped to the highest signal-to-noise (SNR) path to obtain better protection, while other enhancement layers are mapped to other paths such that less important layers are mapped to lower SNR paths in the SVD -decomposed channel. A multiple description code (MDC) (207) is also used in this manner such that at least one coded stream is provided more protection because of the high SNR. This invention pertains to any MIMO based wireless multimedia communication system.

  • Patent number: 7411928
Abstract: Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems are candidates for higher data rate wireless communication systems. Currently, for a single input single output (SISO) 1802.11a system can provide a transmission data rate up to 54 Mbps. The present invention is a 2 by 2 Multiple In Multiple Out (MIMO) system having a decoding apparatus that increases the data rate to over 100 Mbps but at a computation cost about the same as for optimal decoding for a SISO system and 1/64 of the optimal decoding for a 2 by 2 MIMO system. At a bit error rate (BER) of 10-4 level, the 2 by 2 MIMO system of the present invention provides double the transmission data rate of the SISO system with approximately the same signal to noise ratio (SNR).

  • Patent number: 7269216
Abstract: A magnitude only equalizer equalizes a magnitude of a received wireless signal without regard to phase distortions introduced, and transmits the magnitude equalized signal to a timing recovery loop for improved correlation peak detection in a sync based timing recovery scheme. • Publication number: 20070147521
Abstract: A MIMO communication system implements an interleaver design with multiple encoders for more than two transmit antennas for high throughput WLAN communication systems. Multiple encoders are utilized in the transmitter and multiple decoders are utilized in the receiver, wherein each encoder operates at lower clock speed than would be necessary with a single encoder. In conjunction with using multiple encoders, a modified interleaving function for each spatial stream processing allows fully exploring the diversity gains. The provided interleaving function is suitable for transmitter architectures with multiple encoders. Similarly, a modified de-interleaving function is provided that is suitable for receiver architectures with multiple decoders.

  • Patent number: 7236548
Abstract: Bit level, rather than symbol level, diversity combining is employed within a wireless communications receiver. Channel estimates and bit metrics are separately computed for signals received by different antenna elements. Bit metrics are calculated by determining a least squares cumulative difference between all bits within the received symbol and corresponding bits within constellation symbols as modified by the channel estimate. The separately-determined bit metrics are then combined for decoding. Performance improvements over both single antenna systems and multiple antenna systems with symbol level diversity combining are achieved.

  • Publication number: 20070097930
Abstract: A method of communicating data over a wireless local area network according to an IEEE 802.11n proposal for Multi-MCS-Multi-Receiver Aggregation (MMRA), the improvement providing a modified PPDU format with MMRA signaling wherein the HT-SIG format is preserved. Instead of increasing the length of HT-SIG, a modified PPDU format with MMRA signaling is provided where the HT-SIG-MMRA is placed after the HT-LTF. In this manner, the original HT-SIG format is preserved, while accommodating the variable length of HT-SIG-MMRA. Further, in a modified HT-SIG structure, the Length and MCS of the HT-SIG-MMRA signaling part is placed in the LENGTH field and MCS field of HT-SIG1 (4 us), respectively, without changing the length of existing HT-SIG (8 us).

  • Patent number: 7142578
Abstract: A method for a beam forming configuration is provided. A representation of a 3D polygon is formed from a plurality of blocks. The blocks are arranged according to a frequency, a time, and a space within the 3D polygon. Based on the frequency, the time, and the space of an electronic signal, one of the blocks is selected. An equation that is based on the block or to the block and the blocks relationship to one or more of the other blocks is used to form an output.
