Novel compounds according to the present invention are steroid derivatives. These compounds are preferably substituted at the 17 position, with a heterocyclic or nonheterocyclic radical, for example, a 5-membered heterocyclic ring. The present invention also provides methods of synthesizing these novel compounds, pharmaceutical compositions containing these novel compounds, and methods of treating prostate cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy using the androgen synthesis inhibitors of the present invention.
