  • Publication number: 20150313613
Abstract: A reamer for use in minimally invasive hip replacement surgical approaches is provided. The reamer spindle includes an offset elongate housing portion that extends from a proximal housing end portion a distal housing end portion. A handle assembly, preferably comprising a durable lightweight material such as carbon fiber that is removably connectable to the housing of the reamer spindle. A reamer head is removably connectable to the distal neck portion and has a surface configured to cut bone.

  • Publication number: 20140296857
Abstract: An acetabular reaming system is disclosed of the type having a driver and a tool held together by a quick-release coupling mechanism. The tool (10) has a hollow body (12) defining a domed shape with a rotational axis (14), an apex (16) aligned with the axis (14) and a hemispherical wall (18) extending from the apex (16) to an equatorial rim (20) spaced 90 degrees from the axis (14). The rim (20) has an edge (22) visible to the user that indicates the position of the tool (10) relative to the bone. A first plurality of cutting sites (24) is arrayed along the body (12) and a second plurality of cutting sites (28) is arrayed circumferentially along the edge (22). Preferably, the first plurality of cutting sites (24) present raised first teeth (30, 130, 230, 330) having a profile selected from continuous squared (30), continuous rounded (130), discontinuous squared (230) and tongued (330) profiles.

  • Patent number: 8834471
Abstract: A reamer for use in minimally invasive hip replacement surgical approaches is provided. The reamer spindle includes an elongate housing portion that extends along a first axis and a neck or distal portion that extends along a second axis, wherein the second axis extends at an angle of between about 35 degrees and about 65 degrees relative to the first axis. A reamer head is removably connectable to the distal neck portion and has a surface configured to cut bone.

  • Patent number: 8491586
Abstract: Disclosed is a surgical tool holder adapted to connect to a disposable cutting tool, and the surgical instrument combination. The tool holder has a shank with a quick tool coupling at one end and a drive adaptor at a second end. The coupling assembly has a coupling interface for holding the tool, and has a debris reservoir. A locking mechanism is engageable with the shank by a lock interface that holds the coupling assembly in functional assembly, and when unlocked allows component parts of the coupling assembly to be separated for cleaning and sterilization. The surgical tool has a flat base and complementary fittings adapted to be received by the holder's coupling interface. The combination of the flat base with the reservoir defines a relatively enclosed collection space to receive cutting debris from the tool while the holder and tool are coupled together.

  • Publication number: 20080195101
Abstract: Disclosed is a surgical tool holder 11 adapted to connect to a disposable cutting tool 12, and the surgical instrument 10 combination. The tool holder 11 has a shank 14 with a quick tool coupling 24 at one end 16 and a drive adaptor 20 at a second end 22. The coupling assembly 24 has a coupling interface 40 for holding the tool 12, and has a debris reservoir 44. A locking mechanism 26 is engageable with the shank 14 by a lock interface 95 that holds the coupling assembly in functional assembly, and when unlocked allows component parts of the coupling assembly to be separated for cleaning and sterilization. The surgical tool 12 has a flat base 104 and complementary fittings 114 adapted to be received by the holder's coupling interface. The combination of the flat base 104 with the reservoir 44 defines a relatively enclosed collection space 46 to receive cutting debris from the tool 12 while the holder 11 and tool 12 are coupled together.
