  • Patent number: 10021800
Abstract: An electronic device having openings covered by a vent assembly is disclosed. The vent assembly may include multiple adhesive layers surrounding an air-permeable, liquid resistant membrane that allow air to flow into and/or out of the electronic device, while also preventing liquid ingress into the electronic device. The membrane may be supported by several structural elements. For example, the vent assembly includes an adhesive layer secured with the membrane, with the adhesive layer including a web region having multiple ribs that engage the membrane. Also, the vent assembly includes a mesh material that includes a porous region that receives a portion of the adhesive layer. Also, an additional vent assembly may cover an additional opening of the electronic device and provide protection for an operational component in the electronic device. The additional vent assembly may allow air into the additional opening for the operational component.

  • Patent number: 9967375
Abstract: An electronic device having liquid-resistant modifications that prevent liquid ingress into an opening (or openings) in an enclosure of the electronic device is disclosed. For example, the electronic device may include a coating formed from a liquid-resistant material that is applied internally to the enclosure. The electronic device may further include a frame that carries a protective transparent layer designed to cover a display assembly. In order to secure the frame with the enclosure, the electronic device may include an adhesive assembly disposed over an outer perimeter of the coating. The adhesive assembly may include several adhesive parts initially separate from one another. However, with the adhesive parts between the frame and the enclosure, the adhesive parts can be compressed by the frame and the enclosure, causing the adhesive parts to expand and engage each other. As a result, the coating and the adhesive parts provide a seal against liquid.

  • Publication number: 20180110143
Abstract: An electronic device having several modifications designed to prevent liquid ingress into an opening (or openings) of the electronic device is disclosed. For example, the electronic device includes a SIM tray having a sealing element designed to provide a seal at an opening that receives the SIM tray. The sealing element may include a first section and a second section extending from the first section, with the first section designed to bend with respect to (and in some cases collapse onto) the second section. The electronic device may further include an audio module fitted with a sealing element. The sealing element may include extensions extending away from a main body of the sealing element, with some extension designed to engage the audio module, and other extensions designed to engage an audio module interface. The sealing element provides a seal against liquid ingress into the audio module.

  • Patent number: 9832567
Abstract: An electronic device having an assembly is disclosed. The assembly is designed to regulate fluid flow into the electronic device. The assembly may include a membrane having air-permeable and liquid-resistant properties. In other to protect the membrane, the assembly includes a support member and a compressible membrane. Also, the assembly may further include a first housing member and a second housing member that combine to surround the membrane. Each feature of the assembly may include an opening to allow air to pass the assembly. When disposed in an opening of the electronic device, the assembly allows the device to receive air that is used by an operational component in the electronic device. The assembly protects the operational component from liquid ingress while allowing the operational component to communicate with the environment external to the device. The operation component may include a microphone, an audio speaker, or a pressure sensor.

  • Patent number: 9780827
Abstract: This application relates to various button related embodiments for use with a portable electronic device. In some embodiments, a snap clip can be integrated with a button bracket to save space where two separate brackets would take up too much space in the portable electronic device. In other embodiments, a tactile switch can be waterproofed by welding a polymeric layer atop a tactile switch assembly. In this way water can be prevented from contacting moisture sensitive components of the tactile switch assembly. The weld joining the polymeric layer to the tactile switch can include at least one gap to trapped gas surrounding the tactile switch assembly to enter and exit during heat excursions caused by various operating and/or assembly operations.

  • Patent number: 9779894
Abstract: Systems and methods for forming button assemblies for electronic devices are disclosed. According to some embodiments, the button assemblies include one or more sound improvement features to improve the sound that the button assemblies make when pressed by users of the electronic devices. According to some embodiments, the button assemblies include shims that provide proper alignment of the various components of the button assemblies and to accommodate any tolerance stack up of the various components of the button assemblies. The shims can include alignment features to prevent the shims from shifting within the button assemblies. According to some embodiments, thicknesses of the shims are customized to accommodate varying tolerance stack ups of the components of the button assemblies. In some embodiments, the button assemblies include a combination of sound improvement features and shims.

  • Publication number: 20170229951
Abstract: An electronic device may have an electrical component with a moving portion. The moving portion of the electrical component may include a moving mass and may include coils or other circuitry coupled to the moving mass. The moving mass may be supported within a support structure such as a housing structure. Springs may be coupled between walls in the housing structure and end portions of the moving mass. The coils or other circuitry on the moving mass may be coupled to flexible printed circuit cables. The flexible printed circuit cables may be coupled to the coils at the ends of the moving mass adjacent to the springs. The flexible printed circuit cables may have localized stiffeners that help prevent damage to metal traces in the cables during cable bending. The cables may have U-shapes or other suitable shapes.

  • Publication number: 20160217948
Abstract: The embodiments discussed herein relate to electrical switches. Specifically, the embodiments include a pivoting switch that translates a rotational movement of a portion of the pivoting switch into a linear movement for toggling a button. The pivoting switch can include a pin that extends into a bracket in order to define and limit a rotational movement of the pivoting switch. The pivoting switch can further include a switch cavity that can force a knob of the button to move with the pivoting switch. The embodiments can further include an electrical switch having a welded cover plate. The welded cover plate can include arms that extend across and are welded to one or more surfaces of the electrical switch. The welded cover plate provides a more secure retaining mechanism for the electrical switch in order to reduce bending of certain portions of the electrical switch when the electrical switch is toggled.
