    Abstract: In one embodiment, at least a portion of a telephone call from an unknown caller is recorded and played in response to a subsequent call from the unknown caller. At a telephone or a network device, a caller identification number associated with an incoming call is received. A query for a contact database using the caller identification number is generated, and if an empty result is returned from the contact database, a recording for the caller identification number is accessed. The user is presented with an option to play the recording for the caller identification number such that the user initiates a command to play the recording for the caller identification number.
