  • Patent number: 9781809
Abstract: A system and method for automatic path light control based on a detected size and classification of motion around the device using passive infrared (PIR) sensor technologies and distributed classification algorithms, and on detected light levels in and around the path area using ambient light sensor (ALS) technologies. By using such sensor data, the path light does not need to be maintained at a fixed value, which may be inadequate or inefficient at times, nor require constant user adjustments. Implementations of the disclosed subject matter enable automatic path light control that can be dynamic and automatically adjusted to fit the environment, the current user characteristics and the current user movements through the environment.

  • Publication number: 20170278379
Abstract: Hazard detection systems and methods according to embodiments described herein are operative to enable a user to interface with the hazard detection system by performing a touchless gesture. The touchless gesture can be performed in a vicinity of the hazard detection system without requiring physical access to the hazard detection system. This enables the user to interact with the hazard detection system even if it is out of reach. The hazard detection system can detect gestures and perform an appropriate action responsive to the detected gesture. In one embodiment, the hazard detection system can silence its audible alarm or pre-emptively turn off its audible alarm in response to a detected gesture. Gestures can be detected using one or more ultrasonic sensors, or gestures can be detected using a motion detector in combination with one or more ultrasonic sensors.

  • Patent number: 9747769
Abstract: A sensor package is disclosed that includes, a compass, an accelerometer, and an electromagnetic flux tag based open/close sensor. The compass may be activated by a microcontroller in response to an indication of movement detected by an accelerometer. The compass's data may be utilized to determine an orientation for the object such as a door on which the sensor package is situated. The orientation data may indicate that the door is ajar and/or that a second magnetic field is present, suggesting tampering. A notice may be dispatched to a controller for the home security system, a client device, a remote system, etc.

  • Patent number: 9734697
Abstract: A security system is configured to be set in a notify mode if it fails to detect a response from the last person to leave the monitored environment or someone else who have left the house to arm the security system within a finite amount of time. When the security system is in the notify mode, the security system does not generate an alarm signal upon detecting a trigger event that would otherwise trigger an alarm if the system were in a fully armed mode, but instead, transmits a notification to legitimate residents or occupants who have left the monitored environment that the trigger event has occurred.

  • Patent number: 9734702
Abstract: A method may receive, in response to a first event, a first sensor data from a first sensor, and receive, in response to the first event, a second sensor data from a second sensor. The method may select, from among a plurality of event profiles, a first event profile. The first event profile may comprise a first condition matching the first sensor data, a second condition matching the second sensor data, and a plurality of conditions which, when met, indicate the occurrence of the first event. Conditions may include a sensor data, a time period, a user data, a sequence of conditions, or a combination of such data. The first event profile may comprise a first event notice to be provided in response to the occurrence of the first event. The method may provide the first event notice to a recipient indicated by the event profile.

  • Publication number: 20170229007
Abstract: Systems and techniques are provided for motion sensor adjustment. A signal indicating that motion was detected by a motion sensor may be received. A status of an HVAC system may be received from a computing device that controls the operation of vents of the HVAC system. The status of the HVAC system may include times vents of the HVAC system are operating. Using the status of the HVAC system, it may be determined that a vent of the HVAC system located in an area visible to the motion sensor was operating during the time period in which the motion sensor detected motion by correlating the time period in which the motion sensor detected motion with the times the vent was operating as indicated by the status of the HVAC system. The signal indicating that motion was detected may be ignored as a false alert and no alert may be generated.

  • Patent number: 9728076
Abstract: A method of controlling a security system of a premises includes detecting one or more exceptions when the system is set to an alarm mode, determining whether any of the one or more exceptions is a terminal exception, automatically executing an arming procedure according to the alarm mode when all of the exceptions are determined to be non-terminal exceptions, preventing execution of the arming procedure when any of the exceptions are determined to be a terminal exception, and, while in the alarm mode, preventing a sensor associated with a security exception from triggering an alarm when the security exception is fully corrected, and triggering an alarm when a condition that is causing the security exception is adjusted without resulting in full correction of the security exception.

  • Publication number: 20170221343
Abstract: Systems and techniques are provided for sensor bypass. Activation may be received at a bypass input of an entry point sensor of a security system while the entry point sensor is in an armed mode. The entry point sensor may detect that the entry point monitored by the entry point sensor is closed. The entry point sensor may enter into a bypass mode. Detection by the entry point sensor of an opening of the entry point while the entry point sensor is in the bypass mode may not result in the generation of an alarm by the security system.

  • Patent number: 9714772
Abstract: A thermostat may include a housing, a user interface, temperature sensors providing temperature sensor measurements, and a processing system configured to control an HVAC system based on a comparison of a determined ambient temperature and a setpoint temperature. The thermostat may (i) determine time intervals in which direct sunlight is incident on the thermostat; (ii) during time intervals in which direct sunlight is not incident on the thermostat, process the temperature sensor measurements according to a first ambient temperature determination algorithm to compute the determined ambient temperature; and (iii) during time intervals in which it is determined that direct sunlight is incident on the thermostat, process the temperature sensor measurements according to a second ambient temperature determination algorithm to compute the determined ambient temperature that compensates for a heating of the thermostat caused by the direct sunlight.

  • Patent number: 9668320
Abstract: A path light that utilizes an ambient light sensor to determine the lighting conditions may experience feedback from its light source if it determines that the lighting conditions are appropriate to illuminate the path light's light source. The path light, as disclosed herein, may compute an offset value to ascertain the amount of feedback from the light source. Upon learning the offset value, the path light may subtract the offset value from a detected amount of light to determine whether the lighting conditions of its surroundings still meet a threshold level of darkness for the path light to illuminate.

  • Patent number: 9666063
Abstract: Systems and techniques are provided for motion sensor adjustment. A signal indicating that a moving heat source was detected by a passive infrared sensor may be received. A signal including a current temperature may be received. It may be determined based on the current temperature and at least one previous temperature that an area in proximity to the passive infrared sensor has experienced a temperature change. In response to the determination that the area in proximity to the passive infrared sensor has experienced a temperature change, the signal indicating that a moving heat source was detected by the passive infrared sensor may be disregarded as a false alert and no indication of motion detected may be sent.

  • Publication number: 20170148286
Abstract: A magnet and magnetometer may be integrated into a smart home environment and allow it to be placed into an away mode of operation despite an entry point being semi-open. The disclosed implementations can detect a magnetic field strength and determine, based on the detected field strength, an approximate distance that a moveable partition is open. In some configurations, the presence of a second magnetic source can be detected. A notice may be generated based on one or more signals received from the magnetometer. The notice may be sent to a controller, a remote system, a remote device, and/or a client device as disclosed herein.

  • Publication number: 20170127980
Abstract: In an implementation of the disclosed subject matter, a device may emit a first emission sequence of infrared radiation at a subject, and capture a first reflected sequence of infrared radiation reflected from the subject. The first emission sequence may be compared to the first reflected sequence, and, based on the comparison, a sequence of variations may be determined. The sequence of variations may be compared to signal pattern stored in a sleep profile for the subject. The subject may be determined to have exhibited sleep behavior based on the comparison of the sequence of variations to the signal pattern stored in the sleep profile. In response to determining the subject has exhibited sleep behavior, the device may capture a second reflected sequence of radiation reflected from the subject. A breathing rate of the subject and/or a heart rate of the subject may be determined based on the second reflected sequence.
