  • Publication number: 20230262742
Abstract: A communication system is disclosed in which a base station communicates with machine-type-communication (MTC) devices by dividing the base station's cell bandwidth into (non-overlapping) narrowbands. The base station identifies, based on a communication received from a communication device, a capability of that communication device to retune between narrowbands, and provides, to that communication device, control information for controlling how that communication device retunes between different narrowbands, wherein the control information is based on the identified capability of that communication device to retune between narrowbands.

  • Publication number: 20220272676
Abstract: A communication system is presented in which a base station is provided for communicating with a plurality of mobile communication devices in a cellular communication system. The base station operates one of more communication cells and communicates subframes, with each of the plurality of communication devices within the cell(s), each comprising the communication resources of a control region for communicating a control channel and the communication resources of a data region for communicating a respective data channel. The base station communicates a control channel having a first DMRS sequence in a control region of some subframes and a control channel having a second DMRS sequence in a control region of other subframes. The second control channel may be transmitted in a radio beam focussed spatially in a direction of a communication device. The first control channel may be transmitted omnidirectionally throughout the cell(s).

  • Publication number: 20220159435
Abstract: A communication system is disclosed in which a base station communicates with machine-type-communication (MTC) devices by dividing the base station's cell bandwidth into (non-overlapping) narrowbands and subframes in each narrowband. The base station generates and transmits control information (DCI) for allocating a set of physical resource blocks (PRBs) in a plurality of subframes for an MTC device. After the base station transmits the data, the MTC device generates and transmits an HARQ feedback indicating that i) the data has been successfully received in each one of the plurality of subframes (e.g. a single ‘ACK’) or ii) the data has not been received in at least one of the plurality of subframes (e.g. a single ‘NACK’).

  • Publication number: 20070189334
Abstract: The present application relates to a communication method in which a succession of time domain symbols (TDS) are transmitted by a transmitter to one or more receivers. Each time domain symbol has a plurality of signals which are transmitted in parallel by the transmitter. The signals may comprise data signals or pilot signals. At the transmitter, a set of pilot signals assigned to a given time domain symbol is provided with information about a phase vector applied to the time domain symbol. The phase vector is preferably selected with consideration of the reduction in the ratio of peak-to-average-power which can be achieved when the vector is applied to the time domain symbol. Transmitters and receivers for use in the communication method are also provided. The invention is particularly application to OFDM communication systems.

  • Publication number: 20060133525
Abstract: A symbol timing estimation method is provided for use in a communication system, for example an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system having a cyclic prefix extension CPE. Each symbol in a transmitted signal comprises N symbol samples, and the CPE has L symbol samples. The method comprises receiving the signal and processing the symbol samples in the received signal using N and L to obtain a correlation function ?(d) for a first series of L samples and a second series of L samples following N samples after the first series. The obtained correlation function is normalised to produce a basic measure MCP(d) for symbol timing estimation. A second-derivative measure MCP—diff2(d) for symbol timing estimation is also produced based on a second derivative of the basic measure, and the symbol timing is estimated based on the basic and second-derivative measures.

  • Publication number: 20050025254
Abstract: In an adaptive modulation and coding method one or more adjustable values are created (S1), each corresponding to at least one of a plurality of available modulation and coding levels applicable to a signal transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver, and each representing a change to the level(s) to which it corresponds. One or more of said adjustable values is/are adjusted in dependence upon whether or not the signal is received successfully by the receiver (S2-S5). One of said available modulation and coding levels is selected (S6-S8) to apply to the signal based on such an adjustable value. Such a method can enable the appropriate modulation and coding level to be selected even when the path and channel conditions vary. The method is applicable to selecting modulation and coding levels in a high-speed downlink packet access system of a wireless communication network.
