    Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier; a transfer belt facing a surface of the image carrier, forming a nip serving as a transfer position with the image carrier, and configured to transfer a toner image formed on the surface of the image carrier to a recording paper sheet with a transfer bias of opposite polarity to the surface of the image carrier; a fixing section configured to heat the sheet having the transferred toner image thereon to fix the toner image; and a static eliminator disposed downstream of the transfer position in a direction of conveyance of the sheet and configured to expose a back surface of the sheet opposite to the surface having the transferred toner image thereon to a DC discharge having the same polarity as the transfer bias and directed toward a position where the sheet separates from the transfer belt.

The bias controller applies a reverse bias to the transfer member when a first region passes through a nip part. Then, when a second region passes through the nip part, the bias controller applies a fixed first forward bias to the transfer member. When a third region passes through the nip part, in order to implement the control the bias controller applies a variable second forward bias to the transfer member. The first forward bias is set at a predetermined value or above and increases a potential of the transfer member 46 to a level at which a toner image is transferred in the second region when the second region passes through the nip part.

    Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes an image carrying member, a transport belt, a driving roller, a transferring member, a nip portion, and an applying portion. The transferring member makes contact with the inner circumferential surface of the transport belt to press the transport belt against the image carrying member. The nip portion is formed between the transport belt and the image carrying member by the pressure of the transferring member. The applying portion applies a bias to the transferring member. Application of the bias to the transferring member causes, at the nip portion, the toner image carried on the image carrying member to be transferred to the recording medium carried on the transport belt. Near the nip portion, a pair of support members are arranged which keeps both width-direction end parts of the transport belt in contact with the image carrying member.

A guide is immediately upstream of the nip in a sheet conveying direction. The guide is in sliding contact with one side of the transfer sheet and guides the transfer sheet to the nip. The guide includes a rigid member having a flat surface along the sheet conveying direction. A cutout is formed in the flat surface of the rigid member. The guide also has a flat elastic member placed on the flat surface of the rigid member to cover the cutout and to be held in sliding contact with the transfer sheet.

    Abstract: An image forming apparatus which passes a sheet bearing a toner image between a heat roller and a pressure roller constituting a fixing device to fix the toner image onto the sheet. The image forming apparatus comprises thermistors and a controller. The controller starts heating of the heat roller while stopping the heat roller and the pressure roller, then starts rotations of both rollers when the surface temperature of the heat roller, as detected by the thermistor, reaches a set value which is lower than a fixing standby temperature, and permits the use of the fixing device when the surface temperature of the pressure roller, as detected by the thermistor, reaches a predetermined value.
