    Abstract: A light-sensitive material treating apparatus which is small in size and produces a reduced quantity of waste fluid. A current conduction process is applied to a developing solution using an auxiliary tank communicated with a developing tank and to which a supplementary solution is supplied. The developing solution contains a developing agent which is oxidized to an oxidation state by reaction with silver halide and reduced to a reduction state by electronation. The auxiliary tank is separated into two chambers by a cation-exchange membrane, and a cathode and an anode are provided in respective ones of the chambers arranged opposite to each other with respect to the cation-exchange membrane. A current is applied between the two electrodes. The current conduction time is controlled on the basis of current conduction efficiency corresponding to the time of use.

    Abstract: A processing solution such as a developer and fixer is maintained at optimum processing ability by conducting electricity through an anion exchange membrane. In FIG. 1 , for example, an anion exchange membrane A1 and an only H.sup.+ and/or OH.sup.- permeable diaphragm M1 are disposed in a tank 11 to define three compartments 11a, 11b, 11c which are charged with electrolyte solution E1, developer Dev, and electrolyte solution E2 and have disposed therein anode 22, cathode 21 and anode 24, respectively. Silver halide photosensitive material is processed by passing it through the developer. Electricity is conducted between anode 22 and cathode 21 during processing and between anode 24 and cathode 21 during quiescent periods.

In a preferred embodiment, an electric current is passed through the developer to remove halide ions therefrom and to regenerate (reduce) the metal complex. A protective layer may be provided on the silver halide emulsion layer having a thickness of 0.6 .mu.m or less.
