  • Patent number: 7619879
Abstract: In a convertible notebook/tablet computer with a dual-swivel hinge, an arrangement for communicating to a user a preferred rotational direction for pivoting about a z-axis, entirely without wiring or lights and in a manner such that at most only one rotational direction is communicated at a time. Preferably, this is accomplished via one or more windows, disposed on a surface of the hinge, that permit an arrow to be visible in accordance with a preferred rotational direction that a user needs to pivot the monitor/lid with respect to the keyboard based on the rotational direction originally traversed.

  • Patent number: 7360045
Abstract: Provided is a Method and Computer Apparatus being capable of safely and reliably making a backup copy of data stored on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). A user places a PC in a hibernation state by inputting a particular key operation under a typical OS environment. The working state data is stored on the HDD just before the backup copy of data is created. During the process of backup, an OS in a hidden partition of the HDD is booted so as to execute a program for making a dead copy of the HDD. When the dead copy processing by the copy program from the HDD to the backup HDD is completed, the PC system's operation is resumed and an OS is booted so as to recover from the hibernation state to the original state.

  • Patent number: 7240227
Abstract: The automatic restart and resume of computing systems upon reapplication of external power, especially in the context of grid computing, is disclosed. A method receives a signal, such as an ACPI S4 signal, indicating that a power source of a computing system has discharged below a predetermined threshold level. The method sets a flag corresponding to signal receipt. The system enters hibernation or another state. Upon learning that external power has been reapplied, the method determines that the flag is set, and resets it. The system is caused to enter an unattended operation mode in which, for instance, grid-computing tasks may be resumed.

  • Patent number: 7088344
Abstract: Provides control movement of a display area to an image displayed outside a display screen by means of a touch operation using a touch panel in such a general-purpose environment as a desk-top screen of an operating system. In an example embodiment, a data processing apparatus employs a touch panel unit as an input unit. The data processing apparatus includes an operation event detector for detecting an operation preset, to be distinguished from other normal inputs to the panel touch unit; a cursor movement information generator for generating movement information used to move a cursor positioned at the periphery of a display screen to the outside thereof; a cursor movement controller for moving the position of the cursor on a display image according to the generated movement information; and a virtual screen controller for scrolling an item displayed on the display screen according to a cursor movement.

  • Publication number: 20020044156
Abstract: A computer apparatus, a display apparatus, a display control apparatus, a storage medium, a program transmission apparatus, and a display control method that enable visibility to be improved without decreasing ease of use, is provided for. By setting a viewport VP of a prescribed range with a mouse pointer MP as its center and changing a resolution of a display unit 12 when a user performs prescribed operations, an image within a range of the viewport VP is displayed in enlarged form in the entire area of a display area A of the display unit 12.

  • Patent number: 5822597
Abstract: A information processing system which enters power management mode when a predetermined time has elapsed since a last user input (or a last processing operation), adjusts the predetermined time according to the action of the operator in response to entering the power mode. If the user transfers back to normal mode quickly the predetermined reference time is increased. If the user responds only after a delay period the predetermined reference time is decreased. By so adjusting the predetermined time a better balance is achieved between energy saving and user convenience for a current level of operator attention to the computer.
