  • Publication number: 20140317297
Abstract: Even when a configuration in which instances of plural kinds of storage management software having equivalent functions are arranged to cooperatively manage a large-scale storage system is adopted, to prevent occurrence of a management inoperability and configuration information inconsistency and enable the same management operation and information reference as those performed when all management target objects are managed by a single instance. In the present invention, a representative management computer serving as a representative among management computers is determined. The representative management computer collects, from storage apparatuses and host computers, information concerning the management target objects and configuration summary information including a relation type among the objects and determines, on the basis of the configuration summary information, management target objects which each of the management computers should take charge of.

  • Patent number: 8812642
Abstract: Provided is a technique capable of efficient comprehensive management of a system, even if the system is a large-scale storage system. Management software acquires configuration information of a storage system (computer system) in two stages. In a first stage, the management software acquires only basic information of resources (identifiers of resources, the number of resources, and relationship between the resources) included in storage subsystems, host computers, switches, hubs, and the like. The management software determines a range and timing of acquiring detailed configuration information and necessity of holding the detailed configuration information based on the acquired basic information. In a second stage, the management software acquires the detailed configuration information of an appropriate range at appropriate timing. The management software always holds the basic information, but holds the detailed information only necessary to hold.

  • Publication number: 20140129769
Abstract: In recent years, data life cycle management, in which data is relocated from, for example, a new storage sub-system to an older storage sub-system in accordance with how new the data is or the frequency of use of the data, has become important. One technology for achieving data life cycle management is technology for migrating the contents of a storage area (“volume”) of a storage sub-system to another volume without affecting the host computer that uses the volume. In the present invention, when an associated source volume (for example, the source volume in a copy pair association) of a pair of associated volumes is migrated, migration of an associated destination volume (for example, the target volume in the copy pair association) is also controlled. In this way, it is possible to control the migration of a pair (or a group) of associated volumes in accordance with the user's requirements.

  • Publication number: 20140122825
Abstract: In a configuration where a virtual storage array is formed in a physical storage array, if a physical storage administrator acquires a lock for all the physical storage arrays during update of information of multiple physical storage arrays, not only all the physical storage arrays but also all the virtual storage arrays formed therein cannot be manipulated while information update is executed. According to the present invention, when a virtual storage administrator executes change of configuration of the virtual storage array while the physical storage administrator is performing information update of all multiple physical storage arrays and management operation from the virtual storage administrator is not prohibited, the information of the changed configuration is stored in a temporary area of a configuration information database, and at the last of information update, the information of the temporary area is reflected to a normal area of the configuration information database.

  • Publication number: 20130198466
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention is a computer system including one or more storage arrays providing a plurality of storage resources and a management system managing the one or more storage arrays. The management system stores configuration information of the plurality of storage resources. The management system specifies a non-applicable free storage resource for a configuration condition including one or more predesignated condition items in response to a predesignated event and records information of the specified free storage resource and a non-applicable reason in condition non-applicable storage resource information. The management system repeats the specifying and the recording in response to the predesignated event. The management system selects a free storage resource applicable to a predesignated unnecessary storage resource condition from the condition non-applicable storage resource information after the repetition as an unnecessary storage resource candidate.

  • Patent number: 8281068
Abstract: This invention provides, when optimizing a configuration of a storage system using a pool, an optimal configuration while ensuring a policy set by an administrator, the policy concerning a power saving performance, a response performance, or the like. The management computer sets, according to the set policy, priorities to volumes held by a storage subsystem, and reserves volumes satisfying the capacity of the pool, in descending order of the priority. Only some of the reserved volumes are registered for the pool in descending order of the priority. At this time, it can be guaranteed that a host computer makes no access to the volumes which have not been registered for the pool, and therefore the sleep state is set to physical drives forming the volumes or to a controller controlling the physical drives.
