Patent number: 5658536Abstract: An exhaust gas purifying apparatus includes a carrier of a honeycomb structure which is made of at least one flat metal plate and at least one corrugated metal plate which is superimposed on the flat metal plate. A catalytic layer is formed on the surface of the carrier. The carrier suited for being coated with the catalytic layer is disposed in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. The carrier is provided, on an axially intermediate portion thereof, with a large number of louvers which causes a haphazard secondary motion in the exhaust gas. A predetermined portion of the carrier including the turbulence producing portion and an additional region located adjacent to said predetermined region is coated with a larger amount of catalyst than that with which the remaining portion of the carrier is coated, whereby good purifying efficiency can be obtained for a long time.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1995Date of Patent: August 19, 1997Assignee: Nippon Soken, Inc.Inventors: Shinichi Okabe, Tokio Kohama, Tohru Yoshinaga, Kiyohiko Watanabe, Yasuyuki Kawabe

Patent number: 5582805Abstract: An electrically heating catalytic apparatus that quickly heats catalyst to an activation temperature even when the engine is started at a low temperature below the catalyst activation temperature. The apparatus employs an electrically conductive catalyst carrier that is electrically heated. The carrier is provided with local hot spots to be energized. Since the heat is locally generated, the heat capacity of the catalyst carrier is small to shorten a temperature increasing time.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1994Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignees: Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki Kaisha, Nippon Soken, Inc.Inventors: Kouji Yoshizaki, Takaaki Itou, Hiroshi Hirayama, Tetsuo Nagami, Masakatsu Sanada, Kiyohiko Watanabe, Osamu Fujishiro, Tohru Yoshinaga, Yukihiro Shinohara, Yasuyuki Kawabe, Toshihiko Igashira, Akihiro Izawa, Hiroaki Ichikawa, Kenichi Hirada, Toshihiro Takada, Kazuhiro Sakurai, Masahiko Ogai

Patent number: 5567395Abstract: A flat-corrugated combined sheet 16 is obtained from a flat sheet 10 and corrugated sheets 12 and 14 which are welded together. The combined sheet 16 is rolled, so that a catalyst carrier 18 of a honeycomb structure to which an exhaust gas is contacted is obtained. At a middle part of the catalyst carrier 18, the flat sheet 10 has a section 10-1 free of corrugated sheet, and is formed with louvers 21, so that, in the rolled state, a turbulence generating section 30 is created. At a location upstream from the turbulence generating section 30, the flat sheet 10 has spaced sections 10-2 free of corrugated sheet, so that, in the rolled state, low flow-resistance sections 22 are created. The dissipation of heat of the exhaust gas is reduced at the sections 22, so that the temperature of the exhaust gas introduced into the turbulence generating section 30 at locations downstream from the low flow-resistance sections 22 is high, thereby promoting an activation of the catalyst at the section 30.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1995Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Assignee: Nippon Soken, Inc.Inventors: Shinichi Okabe, Tohru Yoshinaga, Kiyohiko Watanabe, Yasuyuki Kawabe

Patent number: 5391851Abstract: Disclosed is a multi-point welding method capable of certainly welding an object having a number of points to be welded for a short time. First, an approximately cylindrical base body is formed by alternately laminating a flat sheet and a corrugated sheet and then winding them in a spiral shape. In this case, there exist a number of contact points of the flat sheet to the corrugated sheet, that is, points to be welded. Next, there is provided an electrode apart from one end surface of the base body by a specified interval and facing to the end surface. After that, by intermittently applying a current across the electrode and the one end surface of the base body thereby intermittently generating electric discharges between the electrode and the one end surface of the base body, to thus fuse and weld the points to be welded of the flat sheet to the corrugated sheet.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1992Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Assignees: Nippon Soken Inc., Nippondenso Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kiyotaka Matsuo, Masao Yokoi, Yasuyuki Kawabe, Ichiro Hashimoto, Keiji Ito
