    Abstract: A fuel injector includes a homogenous charge nozzle outlet set and a conventional nozzle outlet set controlled respectively, by first and second needle valve members. One of the needle valve members moves to an open position while the other needle valve member remains stationary for a homogeneous charge injection event. The former needle valve member stays stationary while the other needle valve member moves to an open position for a conventional injection event. One of the needle valve members is at least partially positioned in the other needle valve member. Thus, the injector can perform homogeneous charge injection events, conventional injection events, or even a mixed mode having both types of injection events in a single engine cycle.

    Abstract: A common rail fuel injector comprises a three-way control valve that controls the flow of high-pressure fuel to a fuel cavity for fuel injection. Specifically, when the control valve is transitioning to a first, on position, from a second, off position, high-pressure fuel is provided to both the fuel cavity and to a check control cavity, thereby preventing fuel injection until the control valve seats in the first, on position. Once seated in the first, on position, the control valve only provides high-pressure fuel to the fuel cavity allowing fuel injection to occur. To stop injection, the control valve is moved from the first, on position to the second, closed position. Once again, while the control valve is in the transition location between the two positions, high-pressure fuel is provided to both the fuel cavity and to the check control cavity thereby terminating injection.

An o-ring is positioned in a lower pressure region between the annulus and the control fluid chamber.

    Abstract: In some hydraulically actuated fuel injectors, a pressure communication passage extends from a pilot valve to the underside of a spool valve to control movement of the same. For the spool valve to move, a substantial amount of fluid flow past the pilot valve is required due to the relatively large amount of fluid that must be displaced by movement of the spool valve member. However, during cold start, when the oil in the pressure communication passage is relatively viscous, it is difficult to move enough fluid past the relatively small flow area through the pilot valve to allow the spool valve to advance to its upper position. Therefore, the fuel injector of the present invention includes a pressure communication passage that is connected to the underside of the spool valve to be separated from the branch that passes through the pilot valve.

    Abstract: A fuel injection system is provided which includes a source of high pressure fuel, a low pressure fuel reservoir, and at least one fuel injector which has an injector body that defines a nozzle chamber, a needle control chamber, a needle control vent, a fuel inlet, and a nozzle outlet. A high pressure line extends between the source of high pressure fuel and the fuel inlet. A low pressure line extends between the low pressure fuel reservoir and the needle control vent. A needle control valve is positioned in the injector body and includes a poppet valve member with a first position in which the needle control chamber is fluidly connected to the fuel inlet but closed to the needle control vent. The poppet valve also has a second position in which the needle control chamber is closed to the fuel inlet but open to the needle control vent.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to engines having multiple hydraulic devices. For instance a multi-cylinder diesel engine might include both an a fuel injector and an engine compression release brake. Traditionally, each of these hydraulic devices has been controlled by an individual actuator control valve. However, engineers have learned that decreasing the number of engine components can increase engine robustness. In addition, engineers have learned that de-coupling fluid pressure to the needle valve member hydraulic surface from fluid pressure lines to other injector components can result in greater control of the injector. Therefore, the present invention utilizes a single actuator control valve to control both hydraulic devices for an engine cylinder and to provide independent control of fluid pressure to the needle valve member closing hydraulic surface.

A pumping element is positioned in the injector body and moveable between a retracted position and an advanced position. A source of biasing fluid at a working pressure is fluidly connected to the unobstructed biasing passage. The valve member is moveable between a first position in which the valve member contacts an upper valve seat to prevent fluid communication of fuel from the fuel chamber to the at least one spray orifice, and a second outward position in which the valve member contacts a lower valve seat to allow fluid communication of fuel from the fuel chamber to the at least one spray orifice. The valve member is directly electrically actuated, preferably by a solenoid. Further, the valve member is biased in the closed position and the valve member is pressure balanced when high pressure fuel in present in the fuel chamber.

At least one of the piston and injector body define a first cavity and a second cavity when the piston is located in an initial portion of its stroke distance. Before a first portion of the hydraulic surface is exposed to fluid pressure in the first cavity, and a second portion of the hydraulic surface is exposed to fluid pressure in the second cavity when the piston is in its initial portion of its stroke distance.
