  • Patent number: 6103988
Abstract: The present invention relates to bonding of optical elements such as an optical waveguide, an optical collimator, an optical attenuator, an optical isolator, etc., and in particular, to an apparatus and method for bonding the optical elements by non-contact soldering to prevent moisture from penetrate into inside the optical elements by performing soldering without being in direct contact with a bonding portion of optical elements and by sealing up completely a gap formed in the bonding portion between the housings during packaging or bonding optical elements.

  • Patent number: 6019522
Abstract: An optical part packaging method and a collimator assembly method are provided. In the method for packaging an optical part having collimators which convert light emitted from a fine light source to a parallel light, and focus the transmitted parallel light, optical devices are bonded in the collimators by a conductive adhesive to increase the adhesiveness between the optical devices and the tensile strength of the optical devices. Then, the collimators are aligned in both sides of the optical part, a first housing, integrally formed, is bonded around the collimators by soldering to protect the optical devices and bond the collimators, and a second housing is bonded around the first housing by a waterproof and vibroisolating material to increase the mechanical strength of the first housing. Finally, protection tubes are bonded to the respective collimators by epoxy sealing to protect the ends of optical fibers in the collimators.

  • Patent number: 5880875
Abstract: A light amplifier is constructed with only one multi-stage optical isolator so as to reduce the size thereof and to lower the fabrication cost thereof. The multi-stage optical isolator has two input ports and two output ports for cutting-off a reverse flow of a forwarding light when a following input light enters a first input port and when an output light enters a second input port. A source pump generates light used to amplify weak input light. A wavelength division multiplexer division-modulates wavelengths of the light generated by the source pump and the light forwarded through the multi-stage optical isolator. An optical fiber amplifies the light from the wavelength division multiplexer, and emits the amplified light through the first port of the multi-stage optical isolator.

  • Patent number: 5841573
Abstract: A optical isolator apparatus suppressing transmission of light in a backward direction having transmitting light detecting stages includes optical fibers respectively arranged at input and output stages without using optical distributers requiring a specifically-processed coating. The apparatus can be used for detecting transmitting light. In other words, without using optical taps requiring a specifically-processed coating. The apparatus includes a first detecting optical fiber adapted to receive multi-reflected light generated in the interior of the optical isolator apparatus and to detect input-stage detection light based on the multi-reflected light and, a first lens adapted to collimate the input signal light. An output optical fiber is adapted to transmit an output signal light. A second detecting optical fiber is adapted to detect backward light reflected from the output optical fiber and introduced again in the interior of the optical isolator apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5768458
Abstract: An optical coupling device includes a ferrule that holds an optical fiber; a ball lens that focuses light from the optical fiber upon a point; and a housing that aligns the ferrule and the ball lens. A method for manufacturing such an optical coupling device includes the steps of fabricating a ferrule to support and hold a single-core optical fiber; inserting and fitting the single-core optical fiber into the center of the ferrule; grinding the face of the ferrule holding the single-core optical fiber; fabricating a ball lens whose surface is coated with an anti-reflection film to focus light from the single-core optical fiber on a point; fabricating an integral housing on the basis of a calculation of an offset distance for aligning the ferrule and the ball lens; fixing the ferrule to the inside of the housing; and pushing the ball lens into the housing with a predetermined pressure to fix the ball lens to the inside of the housing.
