Mechanism for enhanced, bi-directional fine adjustment of cutting insert cartridges in machine tools
Patent number: 9862040Abstract: Cutting insert cartridge for chip removing machining tools has an axial adjustment system threadedly engaged with a cartridge body and a tool body. The axial adjustment system includes a differential screw in threaded engagement with the tool body either directly, for example by threaded engagement with a threaded opening in the tool body, or indirectly, for example by threaded engagement with a cross dowel fastener slidably positioned in an opening in the tool body. Actuation portion positioned axially between threaded end portions of the differential screw has an engagement feature on an outer surface to be driven, e.g., with a tool or by hand, to rotate the differential screw and adjust the axial position of the cartridge. The spaced apart relationship improves access to the actuation portion and engagement feature for rotation of the differential screw. Chip removing machining tools with such cartridges and methods of machining are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2014Date of Patent: January 9, 2018Assignee: SANDVIK INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ABInventor: Yevgeny Kocherovsky -
Patent number: 9475132Abstract: An indexable cutting insert includes at least two side edges each defining an indexable edge of the insert and at least two cutting teeth are on each indexable edge. The cutting insert includes locating means on a plane of the upper face and/or a plane of the lower face. When mounted on a material removal tool, the locating means cooperate with receivers on the working face of the material removal tool to constrain degrees of freedom of the cutting insert. Further, the mounted cutting inserts each locate the radial edge of the cutting teeth in the active position on a common circumference of a circle centered on an axis of rotation of the material removal tool. A mounting system per see is also disclosed as well as a method of removing material from a workpiece with the material removal tool.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2010Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: Sandvik, Inc.Inventors: Yevgeny Kocherovsky, Kenneth Noggle, Michael Charron

Patent number: 8974154Abstract: A cutting tool includes a polygonal cutter body and an end cutting insert for chipforming machining mounted in a serrated seat disposed at an axial end of the cutter body. A bottom surface of the insert has a plurality of parallel serrations meshing with corresponding serrations of the seat. The serrations extend transversely relative to the longitudinal axis for resisting axially rearward cutting forces applied to the insert. The seat is formed directly by the cutter body, or by a shim disposed beneath the insert. The shim is provided with a downward lip to transfer axial forces to the cutter body. The insert can be square or triangular, wherein the serrations are in the form of a plurality of sets of parallel serrations disposed adjacent respective cutting edges.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2011Date of Patent: March 10, 2015Assignee: Sandvik Intellectual Property ABInventors: Brian D. Publication number: 20050169715Abstract: A tool holder includes a plurality of portions arranged in end-to-end relationship and interconnected by friction weld to form a unitary assembly subjected to a heat treatment. The portions formed of different respective materials have different mass properties and/or different chemical compositions. A front-most one of the portions constitutes a cutter head portion, and a rear-most one of the portions constitutes a mounting portion. The cutter head portion can be in the form of an unfinished blank which is subsequently machined. A third portion, e.g. of aluminum, could be provided to minimize the weight of the tool holder.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2004Publication date: August 4, 2005Applicant: VALENITE LLCInventor: Yevgeny Kocherovsky

Patent number: 6409435Abstract: An indexable insert is located on a toolholder with reference to bearing surfaces on the insert and the toolholder which are proximate to the active cutting edge. These bearing surfaces are internal to the peripheral (side) flanks of the insert. Location of the insert in the toolholder is substantially independent of the relation between the toolholder pocket sidewalls and the peripheral flanks of the insert, thereby eliminating sources of error from insert manufacture and pocket manufacture. The insert and toolholder have locating units disposed thereon adapted to matingly engage each other when the insert is placed in the toolholder. At least one of the locator elements has a bearing surface or surfaces that extends through 360° and resulting in less movement of the insert during use.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 2000Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: Valenite Inc.Inventors: Yevgeny Kocherovsky, Lee Reiterman, Foye Powell, Edward Santimaw
