  • Publication number: 20120217508
Abstract: A semiconductor white light source includes a blue emitting semiconductor; a dispersant material disposed about the blue emitting semiconductor; an ultraviolet emitting semiconductor; and a wavelength shifting medium with maximum excitation in the ultraviolet spectrum disposed about the dispersant material and the ultraviolet emitting semiconductor such that ultraviolet light output by the ultraviolet emitting semiconductor illuminates the wavelength shifting medium directly and blue light output by the blue emitting semiconductor illuminates the wavelength shifting medium after passage of the blue light through the dispersant material. The dispersant material and the wavelength shifting medium are separate materials. The blue emitting semiconductor and the ultraviolet emitting semiconductor are arranged to emit light into a common illumination field.

  • Patent number: 8174032
Abstract: Semiconductor white light sources presented herein include special combinations of a blue source and a yellow source where these light fields are substantially overlapped. The source of blue light includes a blue emitting semiconductor operating in a conventional manner. However, this blue light source is combined with a special yellow light source and the light produced by each is mixed together. The yellow light source is primarily comprised of a high output ultraviolet emitting semiconductor coupled to a wavelength shifting medium whereby the semiconductor pumps the wavelength shifting medium causing re-emission at longer wavelengths; namely those corresponding to yellow colored light. These two sources operating in conjunction with each other operate to produce higher outputs than those attainable in competitive white light semiconductor systems. In special versions, provision is made whereby the color coordinates may be tuned by a variable current applied to the blue emitting semiconductor.

  • Publication number: 20080029774
Abstract: Optical sources presented are comprised of a semiconductor emitter and supporting package system including a hard plastic lens cover and mounting substrate with electrical and mechanical support for the semiconductor. A cavity is formed between the lens cover and substrate which supports addition of materials which cooperate with optical propagation and produce some interaction or effect with respect to the beam. Some versions include dispersants and wavelength shifting materials. In any case, the arrangement and spatial distribution of these materials is not trivial. Both the cavity shape and material placement effect the final output of systems produced here. Well designed filling ports in the substrate permit injection of viscous material such that some preferred spatial distribution is realized. Filling port position may cooperate with separate cavities or may merely encourage natural distribution dictated by flow properties of the materials.
