    Abstract: A vehicle underbody includes a battery pack surrounded by an enclosure, and a bracket. The bracket has first and second flanges disposed in a parallel arrangement, and includes a plate having a wall configured to, in response to an impact, rupture at a trigger to allow the enclosure to move away from an impact direction and deform the first flange. The wall is disposed at angle relative to the flanges, and defined such that impact energy is absorbed by the wall and first flange. The first flange, during an impact, moves toward the second flange, which maintains attachment to the vehicle underbody to absorb energy.

    Abstract: Embodiments of this disclosure provide a method and apparatus for estimating polarization dependent loss (PDL) and a receiving device. The method includes: performing equalization processing on pre-processed dual-polarization state signals; performing correlation operations on the equalized dual-polarization state signals and unequalized dual-polarization state signals; constructing an estimation matrix based on a result of the correlation operations; and calculating a polarization dependent loss of the dual-polarization state signals by using one or more feature values of the estimation matrix. Hence, not only PDL in an optical fiber link may be accurately estimated, but also off-line digital signal processing may be performed at a receiver, without needing to incur extra hardware overhead.

    Abstract: A system and method for securing an edge zone in a space, while not restricting normal activities in the space, is provided. The system and method comprises an infrared detection device and a data processing means. The infrared detection device monitors a space using two or more fields of view. Some of the fields of view cover an edge zone of the space, while the rest of the fields of view cover an adjacent zone to the edge zone. The infrared detection device produces a signal when one or more infrared sources, such as human beings, enter one of its fields of view, in which the signal is unique for identifying the field of view being entered. The data processing means processes the signals from the infrared detection device for securing the edge zone with either intrusion detection or escape detection. The data processing means produces an alarm signal when an intrusion or escape is detected, but does not produce such a signal for normal activities in the monitored space, including the edge zone.

    Abstract: A noise source emits an acoustic noise wave with a noise frequency corresponding to an attribute of a control-status signal associated with the noise source. A method to reduce the noise comprises generating, based on the noise frequency corresponding to the attribute, an anti-noise signal having the noise frequency. The method further comprises phase-shifting the anti-noise signal to output a phase-shifted anti-noise signal that can be used to generate a noise-cancelling acoustic wave. The method can include aligning the first anti-noise signal to be in-phase with the acoustic noise wave. An anti-noise apparatus to implement the method includes an anti-noise generator, to generate the anti-noise signal, and a phase shifter to generate and output the phase-shifted anti-noise signal. The anti-noise apparatus can include a phase detector and phase alignment element to align the anti-noise signal to be in-phase with the acoustic noise wave.

    Abstract: An electronic device having liquid-resistant modifications that prevent liquid ingress into an opening (or openings) in an enclosure of the electronic device is disclosed. For example, the electronic device may include a coating formed from a liquid-resistant material that is applied internally to the enclosure. The electronic device may further include a frame that carries a protective transparent layer designed to cover a display assembly. In order to secure the frame with the enclosure, the electronic device may include an adhesive assembly disposed over an outer perimeter of the coating. The adhesive assembly may include several adhesive parts initially separate from one another. However, with the adhesive parts between the frame and the enclosure, the adhesive parts can be compressed by the frame and the enclosure, causing the adhesive parts to expand and engage each other. As a result, the coating and the adhesive parts provide a seal against liquid.
