  • Patent number: 7541426
Abstract: Fluorinated comb co-polymers have a main chain including a semi-rigid hydrophobic fluorinated poly(ether) backbone and comb segments in the form of flexible and monodisperse side chains that are more hydrophilic than the backbone. The side chains may be hydrophilic polymeric chains obtained from “living-type” polymerization, for example polymethacrylates, polyethylene oxides, polystyrenes. Hydrophilic functionality, for example, ionic groups may be selectively introduced onto the side chain post polymerization. The side chain may be sulfonated ?-methyl polystyrene. Such polymers are useful in proton exchange membranes.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 26, 2006
Date of Patent: June 2, 2009
Assignee: National Research Council of Canada
Inventors: Tyler B. Norsten, Jianfu Ding, Michael D. Guiver, Yinghua Qi
  • Patent number: 7531620
Abstract: The invention relates to compounds of formula I: x+y+z=1 and x=0 to 1, y=0 to 1, z=0 to 1 and R is CH3 or CF3 and R1 and R2 each represent H or a functional group. These compounds show promise in films and as optical waveguide materials as well as bimodal interference coupler and arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexer materials.

Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in Right et al.
Inventors: Jianfu Ding, Michael Day, Tyler B. Norsten, Yinghua Qi, Claire L. Callender, Jia Jiang
