  • Publication number: 20070047498
Abstract: A wireless communication method and apparatus for selecting cells in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) measures a downlink path loss of a current serving cell and at least one other cell. The WTRU determines whether a path loss difference between the serving cell and the other cell is below a threshold. If the path loss difference is below the threshold, the WTRU measures a channel quality indicator (CQI) for each of the plurality of subcarrier blocks in the downlink of the current serving cell and the other cell, respectively. The WTRU reports the CQIs to a serving Node-B which selects a new cell based on the CQIs. Alternatively, a centralized access gateway (aGW) may select the new serving cell/Node-B, or the cell selection decision made by the serving Node-B may be forwarded to another Node-B via the centralized aGW.

  • Publication number: 20070036067
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sending downlink control information in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system are disclosed. A Node-B allocates at least one subcarrier block to each of a plurality of wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) for transmission of downlink user data via an OFDMA downlink data channel in accordance with a scheduling mode. The Node-B compiles downlink control information based on the scheduling mode. The Node-B sends the downlink control information to the WTRUs via an OFDMA downlink control channel. The WTRUs receive and process the downlink user data based on the downlink control information.

  • Publication number: 20060281421
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for generating feedback information for transmit power control in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system. Both a transmitter and a receiver comprise multiple antennae for transmission and reception. The transmitter comprises a power allocation unit for controlling transmit power based on a feedback received from the receiver. The receiver comprises a channel estimator and a singular value decomposition (SVD) unit. The channel estimator generates a channel matrix from a signal received from the transmitter and the SVD unit decomposes the channel matrix into D, U and V matrices. The receiver sends a feedback generated based on output from the SVD unit to the transmitter. The feedback may be one of an eigenvalue, a transmit power level or a power control bit or command. A hybrid scheme for selecting one of them based on channel condition may be implemented.

  • Publication number: 20060274641
Abstract: In a wireless communication system comprising at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a base station, and a radio network controller (RNC), a method for constant envelope orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CE-OFDM) modulation comprises the WTRU performing an inverse transform on the data. The WTRU next performs constant envelope (CE) modulation on the data and transmits the CE-OFDM data to the base station. The base station receives the data and CE demodulates the data. The base station performs a transform on the demodulated data.

  • Publication number: 20060274842
Abstract: A method and apparatus for frequency domain joint detection for multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and spread orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems are disclosed. The apparatus includes a receiver having a frequency domain joint detector, whereby channel distortion and data symbols are jointly equalized and detected by the frequency domain joint detector in a frequency domain. Users of the data symbols may be assigned all or a subset of subcarriers with variable spreading factor codes. Alternatively, the subset of subcarriers may be further divided into multiple partitions and the frequency domain joint detection may be performed on the subcarriers in the partition. The users are assigned a spreading code, which may be a Hadamard code, a spread complex quadratic sequence (SCQS) code or any type of orthogonal spreading code.

  • Publication number: 20060256839
Abstract: A hybrid orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system including a transmitter and a receiver is disclosed. The transmitter includes a first spread OFDMA subassembly, a first non-spread OFDMA subassembly and a first common subassembly. The first spread OFDMA subassembly spreads input data and maps the spread data to a first group of subcarriers. The first non-spread OFDMA subassembly maps input data to a second group of subcarriers. The first common subassembly transmits the input data mapped to the first and second group of subcarriers using OFDMA. The receiver includes a second spread OFDMA subassembly, a second non-spread OFDMA subassembly and a second common subassembly. The second common subassembly processes received data to recover data mapped to the subcarriers using OFDMA. The second spread OFDMA subassembly recovers the first input data by separating user data in a code domain and the second non-spread OFDMA subassembly recovers the second input data.

  • Publication number: 20060245472
Abstract: An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-code division multiple access (CDMA) system is disclosed. The system includes a transmitter and a receiver. At the transmitter, a spreading and subcarrier mapping unit spreads an input data symbol with a complex quadratic sequence code to generate a plurality of chips and maps each chip to one of a plurality of subcarriers. An inverse discrete Fourier transform is performed on the chips mapped to the subcarriers and a cyclic prefix (CP) is inserted to an OFDM frame. A parallel-to-serial converter converts the time-domain data into a serial data stream for transmission. At the receiver, a serial-to-parallel converter converts received data into multiple received data streams and the CP is removed from the received data. A discrete Fourier transform is performed on the received data streams and equalization is performed. A despreader despreads an output of the equalizer to recover the transmitted data.

  • Publication number: 20060126548
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing fast detection of a high speed shared control channel (HS-SCCH). The HS-SCCH carries information necessary for receiving data via a high speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH). The apparatus receives messages transmitted via a plurality of HS-SCCHs. The apparatus measures a channel quality for the messages received via each HS-SCCH. The apparatus performs a threshold test by comparing the channel quality with a predetermined threshold. The apparatus then selects a HS-SCCH having the best channel quality among the HS-SCCHs.

  • Publication number: 20060035608
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for transmitting signals at particular angles (i.e. angular hopping) thereby decreasing the amount of signals transmitted at angles that result in signals, or instances thereof, being received by a receiver with poor channel conditions. • Publication number: 20050272472
Abstract: A wireless communication system and method generates and shapes one or more three-dimensional control channel beams for transmitting and receiving signals. Each three-dimensional beam is directed to cover a particular coverage area and beam forming is utilized to adjust bore sight and beam width of the three-dimensional beam in both azimuth and elevation, and the three-dimensional control channel beam is identified. In another embodiment, changes in hot-zones or hot-spots, (i.e., designated high volume user coverage areas), are managed by a network cell base station having at least one antenna. Each of a plurality of wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) served by the base station use a formed beam based on one or more beam characteristics. When the coverage area is changed, the base station instructs at least one of the WTRUs to change its beam characteristics such that it forms a return beam concentrated on the antenna of the base station.

  • Publication number: 20050153663
Abstract: At least one communication is transmitted from a plurality of transmitting antennas. A signal is received. For each transmitting antenna, the received signal is equalized with respect to a channel experience by the communication between the transmitting antenna and the signal receiving, producing symbols. A contribution of that transmitting antenna to the received signal is constructed using the produced symbols. The contribution of that transmitting antenna is subtracted from the received signal for use in further equalization of the received signal with respect to others of the transmitting antennas.
